Say we finish 6th this year and depending on how other teams go in the cups go we either get in the europa or don't.

I say we're more likely to win the europa if we get into it, then finish top 4 and qualify proper for the cl if we don't.

So not just the one off game but 4th and the one off game. I think winning the europa is easier.

I'd imagine we'd do well in the EL if he prioritised it. He wont be able to though. His job security depends on PL position. i'm not sure anyone they've bought bar suarez within the last 5 years are really a class of a player tbh.

you're looking at players like downing, henderson, allen, borini, coutinho, aspas etc. i mean i could go on for 10 minutes here.

none are quality signings.

Even if you're right that Europa weakens our chance of getting 4th, and I'm not convinced on that, I don't expect 4th next year anyway. Winning the Europa seems to me a more realistic prospect.

At the risk of opening old conversations, how many years have we bounced out of cups and not finished 4th anyway. I'd rather take the cups seriously but yeah like you say we can't afford to drop a few million pounds in league positions under our owners.

This isn't an issue exclusive to us though is it. The teams around us have had injuries over the course of the season. It's not an excuse for our inability to kill teams off when we have had massive amounts of possession and chances galore.

If we get in it, I would love for us to really go for it. There are only 9 (maybe 11 actually) years where I can remember our final league position. EL Cup, 10th in the league? Deffo for me.

TBH. it's just a fantasy this fourth spot stuff. It isn't ever happening now. The Moyes grab for it 8 years ago has acted like a beacon for those who still believe we can do it on next to no investment. That time has gone..the door shut firmly on that prospect.

It'd be best all round if we concentrated fully on the EL/FA Cup and LC. Just get safe in the PL and place all our eggs in the cup basket.

There'd be murder though. Because some believe the nonsense that we need to focus on the Holy Grail of the CL.

That's just a recipe for frustration and misery.

Fulham nearly took it it with Hodgson; Boro with McClaren.

Liverpool signed some ok players, they just spent loads too much on them.
Henderson is 'ok', for example.. But for what they paid he should be top class.

As for Rogers.. If you throw enough sh1t at a wall some will stick.. So he must be due to sign a cracker !

Seriously mate maybe not for us but for the neutral they are one of the best teams to watch as they seem to score and concede loads every game. If it wasn't for who they are who would you prefer to watch this season for entertainment and if you was a player especially attacking wouldn't you want to play for one of the most attacking teams?

a small club with no history like newcastle very nearly had that fairytale finish two seasons ago, but alas the dream was ended by a much bigger club.
