This is a good post actually. Earlier in his career he was looking like a McCarthy type player with more attack-mindedness, but recently he's been more Barry but 12742x less effective.

So he's now a middle of the road crab midfielder with a stupid name.
to be fair his teammates did not help him out. Carrick, who prefers to play standoff football, made Cleverley make himself a #4; partnered with Darren Fletcher he suddenly need to play a #8; with Fellaini he need to create as much as a #10; with Giggs... well he need to do everything at once.

Forever playing second fiddle to every single central midfielder stunted his growth, and with Giggs finally pulling the strings at Carrington (I suspect he genuinely wanted the manager job) he had to move himself on for greener pastures.

Haven't watched him play as I only watch Everton and they've yet to play United in a competitive game this season.

Barry should be the number one priority if we're buying a centremifd as he fits the team.

Thought replacing Deulofeu and strikers would be priorities in the off season given that Gibson may be fit eventually

So that's a Chicken Soup, Sui Mai and Beef Chow Mein?

So he's played every central midfield position and looked poor in all of them is what you're saying.

The lid is probably a decent footballer. Just decent though.

I would rather say he's being forced through square, round, triangular, and star-shaped holes for the past few seasons. At the end he forgot his shape.

What's the difference between a #4 and a #8 by the way? I'm guessing #4 sits and #8 is a box to box player? Because I've heard of #9 and #10 but never those.

Holder, and passer. With 3-men central midfields dominating midfielders are now becoming more specialized in their jobs.

One thing is for certain - I was wrong on James McCarthy, thought he'd be OK but take time to bed in and would be a decent squad player at best. Martinez nailed that signing and then some. He also brought in Barry which was another colossal central midfield signing, and had the foresight to realise Fellaini wouldn't fit into his system - a fantastic player, but that's a fair shout and we did well to get rid in retrospect.

So, if we did sign Cleverley, despite my strong misgivings about it, I'd have to accept that Martinez has shown an aptitude equally Moyes, if not better, in the transfer market in relation to central midfielders, and it'd be very foolish of anyone to not give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Pretty much echo's my own thoughts about any Midfielders we sign mate, think it's a Martinez strength actually

been checking out that Powell lad we got linked with as well, actually looks a half decent player
