before they play for everton i pretty much trust no-ones opinion of players on GOT, in the media, at the pub, on the street, at goodison or in the library

Whats happened to this lad in media, social media etc is an absolute disgrace. Hope he comes to us and shows his old success drunk, spoilt, elitist fans that they were wrong to pick on him.

Imagine Barkley losing form for an extended period and getting such stick and losing all confidence? its not on.

I have been talking to Utd Season ticket holders. They ain't arsed if he goes. they compare him to Rodwell. full of potential, but thats about it. He is never going to anymore than a squad player.

Would be fairly happy signing an England international. He didn't get there for nothing.

he really did though ha. he has, done sweet FA this season.

if we sign him, i can't remember a time i've ever been so depressed about an everton signing. we signed poor players in the 90's, but that was when we were very poor. united's centre mid is worse than ours, he couldn't get in there and they finished below us, we should have higher ambitions imo.

I think its important to put Uniteds midfield into context... They had Carrick, a player who barely moved out of the centre circle, and Marouanne "Jogger" Fellaini.

Carrick is like James McCarthy - it took so long for fans to accept he was a good player (when he actually was) that they are still thinking he's a good player now he's on the decline. McCarthy has 10 years left fortunately!

and both of them still contunally go picked ahead of cleverley. that was the point i was making. i may well get vaulted if we do sign him and he turns good (first time for everything i suppose ;)) i just don't see anything in him. i saw things in gibson and thought he was a good buy, especially for the little fee - i just don't like this deal. would much rather diame who would probably cost similar/less.

He's a good player and would certainly fit in with our style of play. However I'd have hoped we'd go for more talented players. This would also mean that we see barkley's future as a no 10 full time and that IMO shouldn't be the case. Anyways a midfield of Mccarthy-cleverley-barkley isn't the worst thing that could happen.

I'm not going to pretend like i know whether he would be great or awful in an Everton strip, but I do know that people, with far superior football minds than I, rate him. So if Roberto thinks he will be a valuable addition to our squad i wont complain. I learned my lesson with McCarthy.
But off my soapbox, i think he could turn it around at Everton. He plays simple quick passes (i.e. McCarthy) and imo would work well next to James. He has unfairly been the scapegoat for a Man United team that cant point to one player that didnt underperform this year, except maybe De Gea. And imagine if Cleverly did turn it around and become the player many think he could be. Cleverly, McCarthy, & Barkley would be an incredible young nucleus in the midfield for years to come.

I dont know about Cleverley to be honest. Part of me despises him due to his constant shocking performances for United and England, but then i remember Roberto had him on loan at Wigan so he clearly rates him, and Roberto isnt stupid.

McCarthy is a great example of fans being "experts" before actually knowing anything about the player. Barry is another.

Its all very much a symptom of the Youtube generation. Despite McCarthy having a great season it would be difficult to put a highlight reel together with the prodigy playing in the back ground attracting comments like

"Come to Madrid James McCarthy" or "Next chelsea player, come on Roman,, sign him up!"

Even if Cleverly had a great season in an awful Man United/Moyes managed system, he isn't the sort of player to appeal to highlight fans...

If Roberto wanted to sign El Hadj Diouf or Joey Barton I'd still put my trust in him.
