Well it was pretty certain he would sign IMO, you could just tell he 1) Didnt want to stay at Villa and 2) El Fraudo cries himself to sleep dreaming of him. I did watch him a lot a few years back and he was bang average, didnt really see any room for improvement and if im honest, he hasnt improved a great deal, but, as I say, it looked likely he would sign, so thought I would watch as many Villa games as possible.

Prudence pays sometimes, unlike the freaking 12months I wasted scouting Moutinho.

All in all, hes never gonna really shine, but hes got lots of energy, not totally bad at the tackling, got a glint of snide in there as well, hasnt shown much, but I can see it, deep down, never hurts that stuff, sometimes can play some superb passes, but mostly just keeps it ticking over and aint a bad little player.

A steal for "free" IMO.

I'd go with that mate, still has a pedigree he hasn't lived up to and more orbital both ends I think he should develop into. He's going to be a bridge with Jmac pressing and water carrying generally, has five goals a season in him maybe the same in assists - think Martinez wanted him for that role and would accept no substitutes. That said he was superb for Villa the last five PL games - he's a very quick thinker.

Suspect most with doubts will soon consider him a decent signing personally.

He's your Jack Wilshire, Aron Ramsey type albeit not as good, but will improve. Type of player you will admire when he's playing for you, rarely amaze, but won't let you down.

That said a decent regular foundation to play, he could rally kick on, more there for me.

For me, like all signings, if he puts in 100% effort then fair enough.

Straquelarsi for example, was last but gave his all and is sort of fondly remembered. Eto'o was an ace player but not committed. Sometimes effort counts and if he shows that I'd say most will be won over à la McCarthy.

Yes, I was gonna speculate, based on how much Fraudo rates him and just the lack of an offensive focal point when Ross is off his game and Lukaku is playing shin bouncy castle, he will be given a stage and you would hope the confidence to play some football, hes shown a real desire(my god, I sound like El Fraudo here) to join the clab. But I will refrain from making bold claims until ive actually watched him perform in blue.

Im a lot more positive about his signing than I would have been 6months ago.

Tom Huddlestone, Seb Larsson, Chris Brunt, Stephen N'Zonzi, Joe Allen....................................................

The list goes on and on, average premier league midfielders who would make useful squad players here, players who can sit on the bench and fill in to a decent standard when needed.

Just like Tom Cleverly.

But none who will improve the first team on a regular basis of a team fighting for a top 6 place.

Actually, I think a team fighting for top 6 is about Cleverley's level.

I wish we were fighting for top 4 and could turn our noses up at the like of Cleverley, but he's a good fit as a starter for a team with top 6 expectations. Hopefully either he'll exceed my expectations and/or we'll be pushing for top four before his contract is up and he'll become a squad player.

I think, because this has been on the back burner for twelve months, people on here have convinced themselves he's bang average based more on internet opinions rather than what they've seen of him on the pitch.

Also against him with posters is the fact that Martinez has loved him for ages and we've just finished a poor season under him. If we'd had a decent season people would be more positive about this. Equally, if this was a Moyes signing some would be more willing to see the positives.

Or I could be talking complete bollocks.

I wouldn't argue with much of that really.

But then it seems most people are positive on him because "he wants to play for us" and Ferguson used to play him.

Obviously no ones gonna know until he plays for us, doesn't matter what gets said before then really.
