don't think thats the case mate. he was gushing about him in the summer when covering the WC. He probably is just easing him in game time wise to help with his transition. I think he's going to be a great player but he's still young and went from playing CB in Hungary to CM in the Prem, hardly an easy transition.

You and DaveK could well be right, what I can't get past though, is when Barry was stinking the place out Besic was still warming the bench. It could be more a case of as Goat said, Besic could look for a move away, specially if Cleverley comes in.

I reckon he will play the Pienaar role next season.

and I don't say that to popcorn, nor do I think it's a job I expect him to do well at, but i'm sure it's where he played him for Wigan and where he played for England (albeit more centrally).

He isn't a holding midfielder anyway so I don't expect him to play there.

Left mid. Vault me.

I can't remember a more certain transfer in our recent history? I mean, we've known since last summer really haven't we?

what a move for him btw, for us...well...he's got alot to prove
I think that McCarthy replacing Fellaini last year was pretty nailed on.

I honestly haven't seen very much of Cleverley. I don't really watch much football other than our games anymore but I am prepared to give him a chance like all our new signings.

I'm confused, I don't know where else he'd play but Martinez apparently also wants a playmaker and I don't know where else they'd play either!

How the thread kept going after this particular post, I have no idea.

Perhaps moving to more of a midfield diamond?
Besic/Barry at base
barkley/Cleverley on left
mcCarthy/Gibson on right

Playmaker/Osman/Pienaar at tip?

Then use Lukaku supported by Naismith/Mirallas/Kone?

I envisage short triangles between Barks McCarths and Clevs, while Lukaku looks on with hands on hips.
You're right. We need that third player to complete an equilateral triangle. That way we can ensure we don't risk creating a goal scoring opportunity. He really knows his trigonometry that Martinez!

Tim Sherwood is expected to offer Tom Cleverley a contract in the next couple of weeks in an attempt to keep the midfielder at Aston Villa after his season-long loan from Manchester United comes to an end. The Villa manager has been impressed with Cleverley since taking over from Paul Lambert and hopes to convince the 25-year-old, who will be a free agent in the summer, he can continue to rebuild his career under his watch.

Cleverley, who has 13 England caps, is keen to explore his options and see what opportunities become available but it is understood he would be open to the idea of holding formal talks with Villa. After failing to make much of an impression under Lambert in a struggling Villa team, Cleverley has looked rejuvenated with Sherwood in charge and he is enjoying his football again.

Villa are aware they will face strong competition from Everton. Roberto Martínez is a big admirer of a player he worked with at Wigan Athletic and was close to bringing to Goodison Park in September only for a temporary deal to fall through when United refused to sanction a loan move.

To have any chance of keeping Cleverley, Villa know they will need to retain their Premier League status - something that looks much more likely on the back of Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur, which lifted them to 15th place and six points clear of the relegation zone.
