Tim Sherwood is expected to offer Tom Cleverley a contract in the next couple of weeks in an attempt to keep the midfielder at Aston Villa after his season-long loan from Manchester United comes to an end. The Villa manager has been impressed with Cleverley since taking over from Paul Lambert and hopes to convince the 25-year-old, who will be a free agent in the summer, he can continue to rebuild his career under his watch.
Cleverley, who has 13 England caps, is keen to explore his options and see what opportunities become available but it is understood he would be open to the idea of holding formal talks with Villa. After failing to make much of an impression under Lambert in a struggling Villa team, Cleverley has looked rejuvenated with Sherwood in charge and he is enjoying his football again.
Villa are aware they will face strong competition from Everton. Roberto Martínez is a big admirer of a player he worked with at Wigan Athletic and was close to bringing to Goodison Park in September only for a temporary deal to fall through when United refused to sanction a loan move.
To have any chance of keeping Cleverley, Villa know they will need to retain their Premier League status - something that looks much more likely on the back of Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur, which lifted them to 15th place and six points clear of the relegation zone.

Will be quite gutted if we dont sign him now.
Was awesome today, has been in great form recently.
Sign this bloke!!
Sherwood has transformed this guy.
Intensity has doubled, makes runs forward, sign him up.
I think he'll stay if he continues like this and gets responsibility from Sherwood as he has. He's won everyone over with his solid solid performances.
Great energy and good distribution. Has really stepped up his game in the last few months, I guess he really wants that move to Everton eh...
I wouldn't go as far to say I'd be gutted if we didn't sign him, but he's being doing a lot better of late.
Even if he is on a free transfer, all that will happen is his wage demands will increase.
Might be in with a chance of signing him up. He is becoming instrumental to the way we play.
I can't remember the last mistake he made in a game. He's ridiculously consistent and not in a dull way. He's contributing all over the pitch.
I'd have paid 7 mill for him in Jan based on current performances
Think he might go somewhere else in the summer now on a free which would be a shame
Paper talk has him going to us, Everton, Newcastle and Spurs. Cant see him going to Newcastle and I cant see Spurs giving him promises to play. Martinez is no doubt tapping him up behind the scenes but im hoping his best period of form since he played for Wigan is enough to convince him this is where he belongs. Along with an English core which he seems to get on with.
Like others ive been critical and am quite happy to eat humble pie, hes gone from a sideways passing, attack ruining passenger to an absolute engine with cute attacking passes and great running off the ball.
Worthy of England caps again on this form.
Id have flown to Birmingham and drove him back to Manchester in January but my god what a change. Hope we get him, throw money at him.
His agent trying to get the best available deal. Neither of those are interested. Villa and us, probably the likes of Stoke, Swansea and Newcastle too.Sky sports are saying that Tottenham and Arsenal are interested in him.
But, he must be useless because several poster on here say so.
Irrelevent really but I remember when Giggs took over at United and in his first game he brought Cleverley back in to the squad and straight in to his first team.
As I said, irrelevant, but Giggs had played with some players in his time and left a few bigger / more expensive names out the side to get him back in.
He clearly rated the lad enough to put his reputation on the line after working with him day in day out for numerous years.
Seems Villa fans are wanting him to stay now;

First 10 or so posts;
He looked excellent in a Wigan side alongside McCarthy.
Poor/scapegoat in a Moyes' Man Utd side.
Found his feet in a woeful Villa setup.
Alex Ferguson rated him highly. He wants (or at least, wanted) to play for Everton. That's enough for me on a free transfer.
