Just because he is on a " Free " does not mean he will be cheap. Forget about Transfer fees for a minute.

He will be on a bosman, him and his agent will want a decent signing on fee in the region of 3 million. He is coming from United, one of the richest clubs in the world who pay high wages because they can afford it. More than likely in the region of of 60 - 80k per week, he won't be looking to take a paycut that's for sure.

4 year contract of 70k per week with signing on fee of 2.5 million will total 16.5 million.

Pack it in people who think because he is free from a transfer fee point of view he will be cheap, he won't.
It's still far cheaper than the rumoured fee United wanted this time last season, it was estimated he'd cost around 7m. Nothing's cheap in football and yes I agree there's no such thing a "free transfer" but not having to pay a transfer fee will save millions of pounds.

He was rated a lot higher when he signed his previous contract at United yes, but with Villa and us being the two sides that you'd presume are offering him a contract, maybe one or two other teams but he's not going to be getting offered of 70k from anyone, I'd persume he's wanting/getting offered around the 50k p/w mark.

Just googled Uniteds wage bill, two different sites have Cleverly on 70k per week.

Could be true or false but he won't be far off it, United don't pay people on the cheap. 180 million wage bill per season proves this.

With Tom on a free, it would not surprise me if he asks for 100k per week or willing to accept 80k on the basis of a large signing on fee.

What united pay him is irrelevant. They aren't paying him anything anymore. I doubt Villa will want to pay him 70k per week.

Cleverly does not have the profile that he had a couple of seasons ago.
He is also at the age where his career depends on making the right move.
The last half a dozen games with Villa showed that a career can get back on track almost as quickly as it can fall away.
I expect that Cleverley will still have international ambitions and will be earing a kings ransom no matter which club he joins, but by making the right move he can extend his career and his earnings at the highest level for years to come.
I would expect that he would earn between 50k and 60k per week. Silly money, but not to established premiership players. Just go back and look at the money being earned by clubs from the TV deals

Two different budgets. We will have a transfer budget for one off fees, transfer fees, signing on fees, loan fees etc and we will have an annual 'salary' budget which will include salaries, bonuses etc...

What we offer him or anyone else will be determined by the second.

The signing on fee will just reduce the first.

So let's get this right, him and his agent know since he has signed his last contract with United that every team in the premiership is getting a record amount from the latest TV deal.

Him and his agent are going to be willing to take a pay cut in the region of 20k.

Come on people, seriously get real here.

Have a look at the history, every new TV deal just causes more money to end up in the players and agents pockets.

Thank god for Cleverly and his agent taking a stand and demanding a wage reduction.

The truth is, he will sign for the team that meets his demands.

This implies there is a demand for clubs wanting to pay him 70k per week. I think if Villa were happy too they'd have looked to have finalised the deal by now. I doubt many teams will be looking to pay him that money. It's like Distin, he will be unlikely to get the 50k per week he got here anywhere else. The same with Peinaar. There's a reason why he's been bombed out of United.

The reason he is getting bombed out of United is he is not good enough.

His agent will aim to get him a better deal than the current 70k he gets now. He will use the Bosman as leverage of a better pay deal. Or, take a paycut on the premise of a huge signing on / loyalty bonus.

Why compare a 25 year old with a 37 year old?

Distin had a club willing to buy him in January tho.

He might have been made an offer of 70k per week from Villa, but could be waiting for a better offer to be made.

Him and his agent hold the cards, and they will play them.
