I just wonder how much he'll have to adapt his game to make that happen. Nothing wrong with adding to it, but sometimes that can curb taking the chance to be creative.

There's no doubt if Evertonianism was a thing, it would reflect the very puritanical catholic (i know the contradiction) origins of the club and the City it exists in. You see that reflected through Unsworth, Royle before him, to an extent from Moyes.

It would be interesting to know where it started. Alex Young never chased around but was known to be quite a fay, languid but brilliant footballer. Maybe when Royle booted out flair players and brought in big physical lads who wanted to tackle and harry?

Either way that isn't Dowell's game and will never be his strength. Unsworth has said they are working hard to get him to do that side of the game. In a way it's a good thing, as it will mean he's more rounded as a player and likely to get game time. However I can't help but thinking at other clubs they would get them to work at their strengths a bit more.

This isn't attack on the youth staff at Everton, who as I've said are the best in the country for me. But we do produce a certain type of player. Hard working, honest, grafters. They are all taught humility and respect. I like this, I'd hate us to have a Sterling come through. Sometimes though you need a flexibility and Dowell is an example of this. His strength will be doing the things most others can't. We'll see.

All no doubt true. Although bad injuries can affect some players longer than others, and he had a bad one IIRC...and just as he was threatening to make a breakthrough. I can only say that from what I've seen of him he is clearly a talent. First touch is superb and he knows where the ball's going next before he receives it. Those are the qualities you look for.

I haven't seen Kenny or Walsh so cant comment.

Just going off others comments on walsh really mate, that hes very very good, combative with skill as well, kenny i just think is brilliant, all energy - naturally attacking fullback with a great passing range on him, and the same type of attitude of fu im good enough that davies has about him - could be our right back for a good ten years after coleman if he gets the chance and takes it

Dowell - mixed on him, all the talent in the world but for me anyway seemd taken aback by the pace of the game compared to udner 23s when given the chance last seaosn, but thats the same with nearly every young player (davies being a exception) good loan spell, come back with confidence and work his way itnot the squad next pre season i hope

Big interview in today's Times sports section.
Especially liked this bit of summary by Oliver Kay:

"It is his general demeanor - coolly assured on the pitch, fiercely committed to improvement on the training ground, refreshingly, delightfully humble off it"

Well worth a read

Certainly all speaks of well of the work being done by Unsworth.

I'm not trying to open up another debate here, but it underlines the point I made before about the need for continuity.

I think it's always ben an Everton conceit that we play football the right way. A conceit that has it's basis in fact. I'd urge anyone who hasn't read the Catterick bo to do so. The way HC put together that team was a work of art. A fine machine that was almost certainly never going to last but that almost wasn't the point - it was a drive for perfection. I wished I'd seen it. All Everton players and teams since have had to be judged by it, which might be unfair but is nonetheless right. I bet someone like Catterick would have seen a talent like Dowell and zeroed in on him straight away.

Thats why we have brought in a DoF in walsh amte, that shoudl ensure continuity - hard thing to do un;less you have one fo those overseeign the long term plan for the club on th eplaying staff front

I agree, but D0F come in all shapes and sizes with different remits, and Walsh looks more like a procurer of talent to me. Someone like Overmars would have been better.

Dunno mate, I'd be shocked of lookman wasn't his idea and dcl as well, bringing in young players is the key.
