How so? There are plenty of examples of players being bought for the future that have worked. Just because it doesn't always come off doesn't mean it's a myth.
That's for teams that aren't challenging at the top for honours, Successful teams buy for the here and now,we can't wait for players to come good anymore. We need success yesterday,so you buy the players that are needed to bring that success. The Don almost said as much when he brought in Rodriguez in the summer.

I respect your opinion but it just doesn't work in the English Premier League this model.

Not arsed so long as they’re good. This could be our best chance of top 4 (or a title?) in years - so if we have to move away from the strategy and get an older player in to help with the present, so be it, I’m all for it

But you can do both. I don't understand the either/or view of it.

I can guarantee that every top club challenging for honours is supplementing their signings for the here and now with signings for further down the road.

Look at Leicester, they buy young players under 25 mainly . soyuncu, tielemans, Ricardo pereira, fofana, Justin, castagne, Maddison, ndidi. They could be at that club for years to come, excellent scouting and signings. We on the other hand are looking to buy players who are coming to the end of there careers?
