Do we have time to allow youngsters to come through or should we be signing the likes of Khedira, Isco, to make things happen now?
You won‘t win anything with kids (became a famous quote when the magnificent Man U side containing Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, the Nevilles and any number of brilliant footballers put that theory to bed, and how)

I think a worry is our lack of players coming through the academy. When we played Liverpools U6s they all were half decent on the ball and had pace to burn. A few of them had played in the pl and Europe of them. Arsenal have the likes of Saka, Martinelli and Smith Rowe who look decent, again with same attributes.

We have only have Gordon who starts one week and then not on the bench for weeks after. When we had a barebones midfield not even Baningame was getting a look in. Simms seems to be consistently scoring but not even getting on the bench for cup games.

I think this problem has roots in a first team that was too inexperienced to cope with even more youngsters. It’s taken several seasons for DCL to be ready.

That barebones midfield did have Davies from the Academy.

This year we have also given games to Kenny, Nkounkou and Gordon. Simms has been on the bench Once I think (last season).

Its also difficult to bring youngsters into the first team when you are not comfortably ahead. It’s such a risk. Liverpool have more opportunities in this respect.

However, I accept your broader point about not enough talent coming through from the academy.

So you are asking when our most successful manager was around and you genuinely think that us winning a trophy would actually harm future windows?

Wow! OK mate , I’ll leave you to get on with it, as I don’t argue with beauts! Enjoy your day. :)

I think that building a winning team in the 80s is much different than now. I could be wrong, but I think financially it's completely different.

I disagree mate, the RS didn’t go straight to winning titles, neither did Man City, win a trophy by any means possible, get that mentality running though the club that they are capable of winning things. If that means we sign a few players with only one or two seasons in them, then so be it. It all comes down to whether you trusts our manager. I do, and if he is happy to take Khadeira, then so am I.

I believe we should be modelling our policy, to that of Leicester's.

Leicester run an absolutely fantastic operation, and have some excellent scouts to boot. The policy of buy young, then sell when stocks are high means they're running close to profit every season and still competitive.

I'm absolutely fine with bringing in the likes of Khedira whatever, if it means we can push forward and change it in long term.

Fofana, Justin, Tielemans, Maddison, Ndidi, Soyuncu were all 22 and under when purchased. In the last 3 seasons only Jonny Evans has been purchased who is over 28. They're just got so much right. Any of those players, if they were to sell them, would sell for £30m+ and whilst I don't want to be a selling club, I do like the idea of signing good younger players, who can play a role, as the one thing we truly miss is pace.

In fairness if we sold Richarlison DCL Holgate Kean and Godfrey they’d go for a pretty penny as well. Agree with you that this is probably the way forward. The issue is that there are some Everton fans who would moan like absolute stink if we sold any of our top players (just like when we sold Lukaku Barkley and Stones). Every club has to sell their top players at the right time. Even United couldn’t keep Ronaldo. When Everton do it though our own fans are the quickest to pounce on us for being a selling club. Maybe a hangover from the Kenwright days of seeing Arteta and 10 million pounds disappear but nowadays player trading is essential and unavoidable.

Not a fan of following other teams models in anything but you're right about Leicester, hardly get it wrong and seem to complete deals without a lot of fuss.

Leicester and Southampton are two examples of how to get it right in the Premier League. Brentford in the Championship. Swansea had it right for about 5 years, then got carried away. The secret is to decide on a way of playing and stick to it, even if you change manager. Then buy young players who suit that style, pace being particularly important. If you work to a rigid system players that may just be fast can look pretty good. Then sell them on, rinse and repeat. It's all about the scouting and Director of Football, which is a more important role than the manager for some clubs these days.

Our most successful manager had no qualms about buying youth or buying OAP’s. If he saw they could improve the team or the squad, he get them in. Our fan base needs to stop obsessing about age or sell-on values. If buying five players in the last year of their careers got us a trophy, then it matters zilch if the all leave the next year on a free?
Yeah I loved Fat Sam Allardyce.

Isnt that why we got the mighty Steve Walsh in?

Fans don't like us selling our best players because traditionally we haven't replaced them. For as long as we replace players like Stones and Lukaku with players like Williams and Tosun people won't trust the process. Using that Leicester example, if you sell Maguire and sign Soyuncu, sell Kante and sign Ndidi etc then people will be fine with it. It's nothing to do with us being a uniquely thick fanbase and everything to do with us seeing the club making a mess of things for the best part of 40 years.

Specifically for centre midfield or across the squad?

In the centre midfield area, the only 'youngster' we have is Davies. Behind him, Onyango is now as of this week training with the firsr team and hes only 17.

If we could sign Khedira or Isco on a loan till the end of the season then thats fine...

The real benefit would be to sign one and remove someone from the squad...for me, thats Besic (not in squad) and one more in Jan.

If we brought in both then we could jettison Besic, Gomes and Delph for example...

That would give us until summer to seek permanent signings + perhaps aid with Davies and Onyangos development.
Its stalled
He is not going to get a lot better
