Besic.
When was the last time we signed someone who had no previous affiliation with the club/manager to persuade them to come and join us that another side was also interested in?

Lukaku (had a loan spell with us, only went permanent as Chelsea didn't want him)
Deulofeu (had a loan spell with us, only went permanent as Barca didn't want him)
Cleverley (played under Martinez)
Barry (had a loan spell with us, only went permanent as City didn't want him)
Kone, Joel, Alcaraz McCarthy (All played undr at Wigan)

Our first impressions/negotiations must be awful, as all of these already new the club/manager before they signed permanantly

I'm sure there is a song somewhere in there.

The musical is coming together nicely. I'm doing a rewrite of Adele's "Someone Like You" which features Martinez singing the lyrics:

Nevermind I'll sign Freddy Adu,
I'm sure he'll do a job for a season or two...
Oh forget it, I quit,
I'm so sick of this <bleep>,
Sometimes I wish I didn't leave Dave Whelan.

I thought the reason was Stoke offered a permanent deal, whereas we only offered a loan...

Could be. They might have been willing to give him decent wages and signing bonus whereas he wouldn't get that from Everton being that we only wanted a loan deal. It all comes down to money with a lot of players, not so much the clubs history, fan base, squad quality, coaching staff, stadium, etc.

AC/DC said it best " come on, come one, listen to the money talk."
