Martinez reckon's McCarthy isn't for sale, apparently he said this after the game today

“There are two reasons why James McCarthy is not for sale,” said Martinez. “The first is that Everton are a club that has balanced its books, it is not a club that needs to sell anybody. The second is that James McCarthy has been a strong performer for me for a number of seasons. I know exactly how he performs, he is a central part of my plans so the answer would be no.”

Interesting how none of this has been printed in press/sky sports transfer bullshiter

One of the most hilarious pictures/moments in the history of GOT

Adama Traore would be good for us as we only have Deulofeu on the right.

Mirallas and Pienaar on the left would also mean McGeady would be surplus...win win.

Roberto i cant see happening unless we offload someone in centre midfield and we need to move players on there anyway...

Spoke to @FCBarça earlier on Chaturbate. He said there's no way Adama (Adelucho Dimdumb to proper fans) will be going anywhere until Hilary Clinton wins the presidency.

What?!?! Of course. We can do the thing our manager has openly said is his primary goal for the window: keep the current core together. We kept Baines, Jags and some others despite interest.

I would have indefinitely more respect for sell to buy proponents if their maths included failure. Even the greatest managers in history have made terrible signings and wasted tens of millions. OF COURSE it would make sense to ship off every player at peak value if one could replace said player easily and immediately with a cheaper option. OF COURSE, using utopian thinking, sell to buy looks like a top idea.

Realistically we can't attract CL quality players and even with 30m we still aren't spending more than any of our rivals for the top 4/6. If we can arrange a transfer to the Primeira where 30m is a lot of money then yeah ... sure ... let's sell.

If one of the top clubs in the world comes in for your players and gives you 30-50m in most other leagues you suddenly have a massive competitive advantage.

a) The player is often sold OUT of your league so your rivals aren't improved.

b) The transfer money represents a significant portion of the entire league spend. In some of these leagues people mention where sell-to-buy works a 30-50m pay-day means you have HALF what the entire rest of the teams will spend COMBINED. In the Prem it means you will still be seventh in spending ... but you'll be a CLOSER seventh. Even the second highest league, La Liga, that number is driven by a couple of teams spending -- so the pay-day you get from a good sale puts you in a sweet 3rd or 4th in spending (with that many CL spots). We're not going to get to 3rd in spend from selling McCarthy.

If you can retain players that CL teams want then you have the core of a CL team. If we sell them we're starting over again and introducing risk that we don't spend the money on CL quality players.

One way we have a CL quality team.

The other way we can sit next to Newcastle, Stoke and Sunderland with a big pile of money trying to attract players who want CL football to a club that finished 11th last year.

I know which way of building a team looks easier to me.

So we should have kept the team with Fellaini and not signed McCarthy and Lukaku?

I agree that eventually (hopefully) you get to a point where it makes more sense to try to keep your team together. I don't think we're there yet; you and Roberto clearly do. Until you get to that point, all you can do is gradually increase the number of quality players you have at any one time. And when you have a board that invests absolutely nothing, the only way you can do that is by selling high and buying low(er).

Agree with all of this. However if someone comes in offering £20m plus, McCarthy IMHO is gone and we replace him with Delph (who has a release clause around the £7m to £8m mark according to the recent rumours of a bid from City) and give Besic some more game time.

Not saying i want rid of James, just that he is more replaceable than some others in the squad.

Looks like Delph has committed (again) to Villa having turned down chance to join Man City.

Shaqiri was slashed from 22/1 to 2/1 earlier today. Still almost certainly means nothing but one can hope.

Honestly, Jonny Evans for less than 5m to play third choice cb wouldn't be that bad; how many players are willing to come of any decent quality and sit on a bench? Think we do need just one at the moment, with the rest of the money to go on that ever elusive playmaker. Would like a loan striker but strongly doubt it.
Two things:

1) the price most often mentioned has been £10m

2) at either price I would say no, and pursue Ron Vlaar on a free instead. Put some of the £5m fee (if it is that) for Evans towards a signing on fee and decent wages for Vlaar.

Jonny mother%@!*ing Evans. God help us.
