Anyone been on a med cruise before? Looking at some options, most cheap deals seem to be with MSC but i have read alot of negative reviews about how they operate.

I have only cruised with Royal Carribean before. Any tips would be great.
Read in the Messymascot thread that @Barnfred 55 is heading off on a cruise shortly. Think he might have done a few. Maybe pop in there and ask. They're a friendly & helpful bunch.

We’ve done a few med crusises , all around really including Adriatic side . We’ve gone out of Rome, Venice and Palma so you‘re really city/ country picking as you can get to some of the major tourist places, Rome, Barcelona, Venice e5c I.e. which ones do you want to visit or return too. ?
Usually the first full day is at sea, so then you have potentially 5 days of sight seeing . You need to plan this , after 3 days of sightseeing in the heat you’re likely to need an easy 4 th or 5 th day. In which case either do something local not involving a trip or a short trip to a small town e.g. Lucca in Italy is an ideal chill out day . Barcelona is a cruise favourite and like a number of places you can do your own thing rather
than the “ organised” trips they lay on. It’s sometimes worth paying for their trips but as I say you can often just do your own thing .

Never been with MSC mate. Most of my cruises have been with P&O because my missus never flew and they offered the best selection of cruises out of Southampton. But whenever I saw one of MSCs ships in port they always looked very impressive. But yeah, I've heard some iffy things about them too, but not sure whether you should take too much notice of them tbh. All depends on what you are looking for from your cruise.

Companies like MSC are set up for the European market and most of the complaints I've heard have come from seasoned P&O cruisers which is set up almost exclusively for the British/Irish market. So things like language, entertainment, food and even announcements which are read out in 4 different languages all got the thumbs down. But you may be ok with that. Plus some people are just a bit snobby. lol

Also things like is it a family holiday or just you and your partner? Are you big drinkers in which case it may be worth going for all inclusive. Would you prefer adult only boats. Also age demographics can be important., some cruises attract older clientele which isn't great if you're a bit of a party animal, but absolutely fine if you're just looking for a chill out. . These all need to be considered when choosing the right cruise for you.

My advice is to speak to a cruise specialist travel agent first and let them know your requirements. They'll go through the different options and advise which cruise line is best to go with, and hem find a cruise to suit. I've always used a company called Bolsover Cruise Club, who are really good and very experienced, but I'm sure most are. Best of luck mate.

Thanks mate.

We aren't really to fussy on ports. Maybe sway more towards Italy or Greece direction. We both have limited annual leave so need to maybe get a 5/6 day cruise.

Yeah on out Carribean cruise we booked most of our excursions on the boat apart from St Marten where we just did our own thing and made our own way to Maho Beach.

Yeah all the reviews i seen of MSC said the ships are nice, good interior. They did mention the announcements being read in multiple languages, that wouldnt really bother me. It was more around how their billing system works and lots of reviews saying the basics you expect on other cruises are lacking on the MSC ships like toilet roll, towels and the dining experiences being quite limited.

It would just be me and the wife, who is also pregnant, so whatever we choose the drinks packages will be part of the consideration, for me just though. I remember on our Royal Carribean cruise both people in the room needed to have the drinks package. But we opted not to go for it as i can get a bit greedy when it's unlimited.

Will check that out mate. I have been looking at a site called vacations 2 go. Friends of ours used that to book a cruise and it has some big discounts.

One of the MSC cruises was 6/7 nights from Venice and was £169. But alternatively there is a Royal Carribean cruise for 5/6 nights from Athens (I think) that was around £400.

We are looking around October time so could be flexible and hold of for some more discounts.

Still in Madagascar but back in the capital city. We took our kiddo to our field site and he was largely a champ, save for some epic tantrums, for being just a 5yr old (22 hours of flight time and 3 days of 10 hour car rides over very rough roads) and 14 days in a tent w/no running water, electricity, etc.

Here he is with a lemur in the background.

Will post more when I’m back in the USA.

If you didn't start singing "I like to move it move it", at that moment then you are a bad parent

A few more random photos from Madagascar from this past August:

The capital city has a nice feel to it, with some nice places to eat and stay. Here is some of our team, grad student Nick (first time) and Dr. Chloe (colleague/researcher) in a little cafe:

This is our hotel, which is quite nice:

Can't remember if I posted this, but this was our hotel room:

I invite you to take a close look at the oil painting on the wall. I entitled it "Drunk Hobo Circumcision Party"...

Then we depart to drive down to our field site, going through some crazy roads.
