Travel thread 3.0

Anyone solo travellers out there? I'm planning on my first Euro solo trip next year and I'm thinking Amsterdam (not for those reasons!!). Finding it quite daunting to even think about, happy to go anywhere in the UK solo, but Euro is a whole new ball game. Any better suggestions?
I used to travel on my own quite a bit. Barcelona, Nice a few times. Really enjoyed it, can go where you like, do whatever you like, without worrying about agreeing it with anyone else. Mainly stayed in hostels which was a great way to meet other people and find someone to hang/go out with if you so desire.

Anyone climbed Kilimanjaro?

Its been something i have wanted to do for years and with the first little one on the way soon i think i need to do it within the next year to be able to justify the cost.
My son did it when he was at uni, it was a charity thing and he had to raise a specific amount of money but that covered all flights and expenses, it may be worth you looking into that and paying whatever the “donation” is. They went to Zanzibar after the climb.

See i did alot of work in the community sector and i have a real gripe with those charity type activities/trips. An example being a local mental health charity runs a sponsored sky dive and put a minimum of £300 raised. Most people raise the £300 and stop. Cost of the skydive to the facilitating company is £250 so the charity gets £50.

If i do the trip i will aim to attach a charitable element. Thinking to raise fund for the adult disability project my brother attends. But i will make it clear i will be paying 100% for everything in the trip and any money raised will go directly to the charity.

I understand not everyone thinks the same as me so not having a go. Just my personal opinion that i bore everyone in the community sector with particulalry when it comes to the voluntourism based Africa social action projects that are really glorified holidays.

Good stuff mate, have a house refurb going on so hopefully will book in the new year.

Did you book with a company local to you or with guides out there?
I used a US company (Alpine Ascents) even though I’m U.K. based, simply because I’ve climbed with them before and I knew one of the guides who led the expedition.

I would say book with a reputable company who will include everything like flights, transfers, guides etc… Some now tag safaris and beach holidays onto their climbing package to make it an all round top trip.

Yeah i have been in contact with an Irish based company so will most likely go with them.

…..we’ve just booked to go away at the beginning of Jan for a few weeks. Weather in Canaries will only be mild but much better than being stuck here.

You should have stayed on the plane for another hour or so and gone to Cape Verde where the weather should be a bit better. Not a lot to do there mind but ok for some winter sun.
