Travel thread 3.0

Planning to go to Croatia in September and try to see a few places, potentially renting a car. Anyone done similar before?
My experience of Croatia is limited - flew into Dubrovnik on the way to a skiing holiday in Bosnia.
We did have a day in Dubrovnik on the way back, however, and it's a beautiful city. Well worth a day's sightseeing just to soak in the stunning architecture in the Old Town, and we found a decent selection of restaurants and wine bars to choose from. It was pretty quiet, but I'd imagine that's because we were there in February, I can imagine it would get pretty busy in the summer.

Going on a trip for her 50 th, New York for 3 Nights and Barbados for 8, straight from New York,
Major holiday experience for us and something that we’ve never done before and is a one off,
We’ll be traditional tourists for New York, question is how much spends do you reckon for that leg of the journey ?
All depends on what traditional means for you.

Mrs. Tree and I went to NYC for a couple days just before Christmas in 2015. Two tickets to a broadway show cost us about $90 dollars from the TKTS booth, but we were flexible on what we were going to see. We found eating out to be relatively expensive, mainly because of the ridiculous tipping culture, but there is an incredible range of cuisines on offer to suit most budgets and some of the fast food is pretty cheap (and incredibly unhealthy!). It's not going to work for you if musical theatre is not your thing, but I loved Ellen's Stardust Diner on Time Square.

One thing we liked was the fact that Manhattan Island is a very walkable place. We split our days according to what we wanted to see and in doing so avoided the need to use the underground or cabs: day one was Time Square, Rockerfeller Centre, Empire State Building, the Met, Central Park, day two started at the Intrepid and we then took the river taxi to Ground Zero, Brooklyn Bridge and all points between. Pretty clean city with a reassuring visible police presence - felt very safe there.

In answer to your original question: ignoring accommodation costs you could easily spend $1000 in three days in New York - catch a game at Madison Square Garden and a Broadway Show and that could be $400 straight away. Equally you could get change out of $1000 INCLUDING your accommodation if you just wander around and visit some of the famous buildings you've seen in the movies.

Summer it’s heaving. Most say off season there is better

Kin amazing city and country. I need to get back before too long. I've only seen Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka, but all three places immense. One thing I can tell you NOT to do is go up the Tokyo Skytree. I'm a massive fan of skyscrapers and try to get up as many as possible, but this place is ridiculous if you're planning on taking pictures from up the top. The layout is all wrong and it's virtually impossible to get a decent shot. Don't waste your money! Can echo most of what @Zatara says above in terms of areas to look at.

Forgot to mention going to Saitama to watch Urawa Reds.

Yokohama to watch the Baystars (i think thats the name) baseball team.

Nice experiences

Agreed on Tokyo, boss place. Unfortunately our stay there was disrupted by a typhoon so we missed a lot

Ive been bar hopping in Shinjuku during a major typhoon lol

Definitely. And not to forget that the sole purpose of a Broadway show is to make women famish for blowjobs due to all of the subtext.

So there's always that.

Been a couple of times. Once used Split as a base for a couple of days and went to Krka waterfalls and Trogir, as well as various other places on the way there and back, before heading over to Hvar Island for a couple of days.
Another time flew into Dubrovnik and had a couple of days in the OId Town before getting the boat up the coast to Makarska and staying there for a week. Lots to do activity and sightseeing wise.
Would like to fly into Pula, further North, and have a look round there and Rovinj at some point in the future.
Only Dubrovnik seems to be on high up the tourist map from a UK point of view which surprises me as there are lots of places and islands to visit

Thanks for the reply mate,
We’re building an itinerary for the trip and the majority of things we want to see most don’t cost much, going to a show or a game is something that we’re going to swerve as the shows aren’t really us and I’m certainly having a break from sports!

I went there a few years back, I think it was in Easter so not so busy. Arrived in Zadar and rented a car and went south staying in Split and Dubrovnik. Visited Mostar in Bosnia along the way and also went to Kotor in Montenegro which has amazing scenery. Interesting place and seem to remember reasonably cheap
