Travel thread 3.0

On the last leg of my current trip to North America.

Started in Cancun for easy access to Chichen Itza. It was #1 on a my bucket list and ended up being quite underwhelming. It's a long way for what amounts to a single pyramid. Cancun is sterile but pleasant enough. The local bus going up and down the hotel zone is brilliant.

From there I hit Toronto and did Niagara falls. A nice city with loads of food options and the falls are impressive. I followed that with Calgary. A dull place with nothing of interest and at least 30 years behind the modern world but it did give me access to Banff national park which is truly stunning. Well worth adding to the bucket list.

I'm now in New York and I'd forgotten how annoying it is. Loud, bright and dirty. The most overrated city on Earth.

Sat in Dublin Airport. Never realised how hilly the land was in this area.
Rough plans are in place to do Ireland but always thought it'd be over by Galway as that's where my name is from.
Maybe half a week in both. Would love to go hiking over this side.

@Bkk Andy did you make it further south from Cancun to Tulum?

Used to be a backpacking gem but is exploding as a destination

In general this region of two large states of Mexico is varied, Medina in particular is beautiful
I didn't make Tulum this time. I feel like I didn't see the real Mexico in Cancun - it's designed for tourists. Maybe I'll look at Mexico City for a future trip.

Skipping Chicago on the way to Canada is madness. I may be biased as that's my closest real city (apologies Milwaukee, but come on, what even are you?).
I always enjoy my Chicago trips.
A fabulous skyline and the boat tours are a great way to see them. The gangster history is entertaining if you're into that kind of thing. But I don't personally find it a pleasant city. The racial divide is strikingly obvious.

Chicago deep dish is an abomination. The worst pizza style I've ever come across.

Looks lovely …. We’ve just booked a week in Kos later this year, Corfu was mentioned as an option but we settled on Kos…. Hope it’s as nice as that 😂😂😂
It's nice mate, temperature wise it's in the 20's so warm but not too warm to be uncomfortable.

Lots of places here still closed but seem to be preparing to open for the season

In general I detest Cancun due to how artificial and exclusionary it is (locals have no beach access). I mean, it’s an amusement park destination (no local culture) analogous to Hurghada

Mexico has a lot of great areas and foods to explore but also can be dangerous depending on where you go

Racial divide is America. Even smaller cities and towns are the same. Might give the illusion being integrated but it never is.

Also the chicago pizza thing, couldn't agree more.
Good pizza is amazing.
Good deep dish is decent.
Bad pizza can still be decent( looking at you Sbarro)
Bad deep dish is a horrible soup.
