Bebo, this fella is spot on about where to go and overall risks…stay safe budNice nice.
The inner harbor is perfectly safe, but the further from the water you go, the sketchier it gets. I'd be a bit careful walking too much at night, might be best to take an Uber once the sun goes down.
As for recommendations, I'd certainly check out Fells Point. Also by the water a bit east of the inner harbor. Nice area with some cool shops/restaurants. There's also a brewery called "Ministry of Brewing" that's located in an old church if you fancy a beer.
Overall the city isn't as bad as it's made out to be IMO, but still a place you want to be a bit careful.
I went there for a couple of days to watch the blues get beat 0-5 by Fenerbahce in a friendly around 2005, we were based around Taksim square which is very hectic but full of bars and restaurants, I seem to remember a decent meal there which was a full roast chicken cooked to perfection. We also did a boat cruise down the Bosphorus which was decent. Only around 20 Blues went to the game because it was announced at short notice and was played at the Ataturk where the reds had won the European Cup a couple of months before, Fenerbahce had around 45000 there and they were taking it proper serious so I wasn't to bothered about our 0-5 lossHas anyone been to Istanbul for a visit?
I’m going there, have never been before , apart from the usual internet recommendations, can anyone recommend food, drinking and places to see?
Let us know good things you end up doing mate. I'll probably be in both places next year so would also be grateful to hear recommendations of things to do.Off to NYC and Philadelphia on Sunday for the wifes 40th, can't wait. Been a few times so looking for different things to do. We have the Bronx Zoo booked and we are going to see the Mets v Orioles in the Baseball along with the Harry Potter show on Broadway, however im most looking forward to seeing Springsteen in Philly. Might shoot over to New Jersey and have a look at Tony Sopranos house.
