It's important to be able to keep it tight at the back and we didn't look much like conceding all game. I think 3 at the back and 2 DMs is quite extreme though and so I doubt we'll use that formation regularly.

Everton v Espanyol

Everton v Stoke

Ronald Koeman admits he took plenty from his tactical experiment in the 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Everton lined up with Mason Holgate, John Stones and Ramiro Funes Morias a back three, and a solid defensive display kept the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial at bay.

But Koeman called for more quality from his side going forward, despite them carving out the better chances through Romelu Lukaku’s header and a Kevin Mirallas effort after the interval.

“I think we played differently to what we have done in our previous friendlies,” he told evertontv. “It was a different system and that can be difficult for players. I like to change things sometimes and in friendlies you can take that opportunity.

“We played with a very good defensive organisation. United did not create a lot of big chances, maybe two in the first half, but nothing in the second.
“That aspect of football was good tonight but our ball possession was not good enough. There were too many easy balls.

“But we had the best chances in the game, like the header for Romelu in the first half, then Kevin in the second.

“So it is positive because this is what you need but I expect better quality on the ball and that was not good enough tonight.”

The game was, of course, in honour of former Blues academy graduate Rooney’s contribution at United.

There was plenty of bite in the contest, played in front of 60,000 supporters and Koeman was happy that such a game has formed part of Everton’s pre-season preparations.

He added: “That is good because there is a little bit more pressure on the players. It was a testimonial and both sides made a lot of changes during the game. But it was a serious friendly game and the boys did well.

“We worked very hard to get a result and a good performance and we are little bit more closer to the start of the season.

“We still have one friendly to go and we are looking forward to Saturday against Espanyol.”

I think we all need to chill out. Today was only a friendly vs United but I saw some positive signs. I like how the team are pressing the opposition, trying to not give them time on the ball. I can see how Gueye ability to spot an intercept may prove crucial. I don't really get the despondency in the post match reports, especially the echo, I must have been watching a different match.

We honestly should have won. Lukaku and Kevin had the best chances and they only had the Ibra chance despite all the possession

Was pretty happy with that, thought they defended very well. Hopefully on Saturday the attacking edge can be there, and we can Goodison right behind the team before the Spurs game.

I really can't see McCarthy or Barry making it under this manager though. If he's all about tempo and forward passing, these two won't be in his plans.

I didn't like seeing pretty much last season's team all over again, and we are impotent going forward. Need creativity in the middle of the park and another striker.
