I do get what you are saying. It's not an easy situation. It wasn't an easy situation when you know the Taliban are oppressing women, or Saddam is mistreating his own citizens (and that's me being very and not swearing) but I'm not sure you can base world diplomacy on the premise of what you would do if someone lamps you.

The reality is that Russia, Nato and Ukraine is not a simple situation of a mugger and the mugged. It is a situation of competing interests where everyone is trying to mug each other. I'd want a world where that incentive is removed, but before we can get to that point we probably have to have a truce.

None of this makes what Putin has done vaguely acceptable. I happen to have a lot of sympathy for the Russian speaking population in the east of the country, but what he has done invalidates the legitimate concerns he has shown towards them.

To bring it back to point, I just don't think citizens should pay the penalty for that. Abramovich is an Israeli citizen, and his daughter has come out against the war. I think it's motivated by vengeance which on the one hand is fair enough, but on the other isn't actually very productive.

Yo me, it should be made very clear to Putin, he has to get his troops out of Ukraine. That we will offer tangible support to Ukraine and continue to acknowledge it's existence as a country. That any solution is built upon the premise that he acknowledges it's existence and will not attack it again.
Sadly in order to bring an aggressor to the table to discuss peace you invariably have to apply some form of external pressure, usually either military or financial, preferably both.
Standing by wringing your hands and shouting ‘Shame’ simply has no history of success, quite the opposite I’m afraid.

I sometimes wish the Internet didn't exist.

Yet I'm drawn to it, a moth to a flame. Reading page upon page of people insisting that they are right, and then insulting people with a different opinion.

"Usmanov is best mates with Putin and obviously supports what is going in Ukraine, he's practically killing mothers and babies himself for sport. " is the general theme from several posters.

Id imagine every Oligarch keeps Putin 'onside' as it makes good business sense. I doubt very much they're all egging him on and sharing high fives as more bombs fall.

Does that make him a Saint, 'not guilty' of a accusations about how his vast wealth was acquired?` No.

Should he therefore come out with vocal opposition? Yes? Would you really?

Don't lie. You'd crap your pants and keep quiet.

The Ukraine issue could have/should have been nipped in the bud years ago. It wasn't because pretty much every world leader is a self-serving, pants-pissing coward. (Clearly, the Ukrainian President isn't.)
In a nutshell.

Best post in the thread.

The attack has been called out, and it's disgraceful.

So is breaking laws in the middle of a pandemic, and then lying about it over and over and over and over again.

I am all for stopping Putin. What I'm against is law breakers in this country, pointing fingers at businessman, and businesses and ratcheting up a reactionary and xenophobic hate campaign against those individuals. I've just seen that Zara Sultana, has now had a death threat for arguing for a peaceful diplomatic solution, as people think she's a traitor. This rhetoric has gone too far now, and innocent people are going to get hurt. It needs to stop.
Zara Sultana blames NATO and UK aggression for the invasion of Ukraine. Her mentor has regularly gone in to bat for Russia on the international stage. Traitor is a strong word but it's in the right ballpark.

Unfortunately there is no room for you and your sensible attitude on this forum.

We expect business associates of Putin to criticise and distance themselves from him and his regime.

However Russia is still not closed off from the SWIFT banking system.....why?

Because it would also hurt the economies of countries that have a lot of trade with Russia.

Sounds like hypocrisy to me.
Just as the speech from Boris Johnson during the week about being good neighbours and not invading another countries sovereign territory was interesting and ironic to many and in particular Ireland who spent 800 years being invaded by our neighbour.

You dont have a clue. The oligarchs are part of the Putin system. Without the oligarchs no Putin!. Putin himself is an oligarch. The Germans almost got his yacht a few days ago in a dock in Hamburg. Kleptocracy all over.He did get it out at the last minute. So the crying about the poor Usmanov is the most ridiculous thing ever!!
Do you think sanctions on a few oligarchs will make the slightest difference when the rest of the world's economies are more interested in protecting themselves than the Ukraine.

Outside of the training ground sponsorship and holding the rights to hold the naming rights to BMD, he had little involvement with the club.

My thoughts are, I don’t like that he’s mates with Putin, I don’t like what Putin is trying to do to the people of Ukraine and I’m worried about the club’s name being dragged like Chelsea are with Abramovich but at the same time it’s not a unholy disaster that you’re trying to paint, if, big if, Moshiri gets pulled in as well, he will sell up to someone else who would press forward with the stadium and what not
lol lol lol

Everything Moshiri owns he owns.

Incorrect and you should withdraw that. The Tories being awash with Russian money is a fact though.

very true, this will get worse and ugly before it gets better. The entire western world needs to stand up and be counted, we will need to eat a sh1t butty or two, what ever that entails, absolutely whatever, it is worth it. Those old enough to remember the USSR at its most bleak, will recall the people of the USSR were existing, not living. We must accept whatever it takes to make sure others don't succumb back to that existence

Alisher Usmanov on Putin

What a pity all the humanitarians virtue-signalling on this thread were so silent as the CIA overthrew the democratically elected government of Ukraine in 2014; when the local Nazis massacred Odessans three months later; when the US-controlled regime launched a full-scale military assault on the Donbass in 2015; assassinated & tortured political opposition as a matter of routine; denied the use of the Russian language; and burned down Orthodox churches.

Well, where were you?

I stand by my post.
When Moshiri decides or is forced to sell up, we won't have any trouble finding a new and better owner.
That's possible only if we get a stadium built. And even then this club would have to attract Saudi / Qatari investment...and that would be a massive leap forward in terms of morality.

This club is sucking on the crackpipe of Putin supporting oligarch cash and anyone who supports this club AND opposes that cash are dancing on the head of a pin.
