When discussing the morality of ownership of football clubs Mr. Moores provides another interesting story.Appreciate the sentiment but I have to wonder whether John Moores felt himself in any way whatever subject to popular feeling.
He was essentially a bookmaker who devised a clever way of providing people with the opportunity to gamble on the results of football matches , the Football Pools.
The football authorities were horrified that another of the scourges of society was becoming intimately associated with the game of football. They were also uncomfortable with possibility of corruption None more so than Everton under our redoubtable chairman and Evertonian Wilf Cuff.
Cuff led the way in attempting to undermine the ‘pools’ eventually by the league refusing to publish the weekends fixture list until the last minute.
Obviously such measure failed and the ‘pools’ went on to be extremely successful and Mr. Moores became very wealthy.
When he invested in our football club engendering our most successful period, he must have felt a sense of triumph essentially occupying his arch enemies former seat, as well as being able to ‘put something back’into the sport that made him.
It is worth noting ,however, that ownership of Everton also helped protect his primary revenue stream.
