USMNT

Unfortunately US Soccer runs both the National Team and MLS to a large extent and as a result wants each to build on each other. This means they put a yes man in Berhalter in charge who won't do what really should be done and just cut off the MLS except for extreme cases because the league generally isn't even Championship standard and isn't going to keep players at an international level. Playing Concacaf sides should be a step down for the US players and it hasn't been that when MLS supplies the squad.

To be honest MLS has mostly helped all (excluding Mexico) the other Concacaf teams. MLS is a higher standard than their home leagues.

Berhalter is a nepotism hire on par with Kushner. We do have young talent. We now need someone to push them forward. I think what will save the national team at the expense of MLS is the lesson of not qualifying for 2018 coupled with a new crop of players who are choosing to play overseas and not just "settle" with their dog, 3br condo, and safe contract in hipster cities like Portland. At least I hope that's the case.

Thanks Nymz. Seeing young Americans now actually playing for the likes of Juventus, Leipzig, Barca, Chelsea, Dortmund, and Bayern is quite a nice change for us. Was only 3 years ago we were losing to Trinidad to be denied a place at the WC. Feels like a “The night is darkest just before the dawn” type thing at the moment.
The 25 and older players for the USMNT are, as a whole, terrible.

Yeah absolutely. I mean the main thing that cost us in the 2018 cycle was the main players coming back to MLS and collectively dropping a few levels because the league stinks. Unfortunately no one in US soccer media is allowed to point that out because they'll be shut out, so no one talks about it. But the players seem to know which is all that matters.

der Jurgen was right about this but I’ll never forgive him for dropping Landycakes

We also currently have a bunch of players that are multinational and eligible to play/develop in Europe at a young age.

What's your best team atm?
I think it is probably something like:

Steffen
Dest Miazga Brooks Robinson
Adams
McKennie Musah
Reyna Sargent Pulisic
But it is close on a lot of spots other than Steffen, Dest, Adams, McKennie and Pulisic. Brooks is probably the best CB but who partners him is a complete toss up. Dest is both the best RB and LB so the other option is swapping him across and playing Reggie Cannon who has always impressed me at RB. The third CM could be a whole host of players but Musah was pretty good this month so I left him in. The center forward spot is wide open really.

What is encouraging is that is a decent team with a strong enough core and enough other options available now or coming through that it could be a real handful by 2022 or 2026.

Always looked good when I've seen him and it's hardly like Tim Ream has been exceptional anywhere.
No Ream is not good and if Robinson got to Europe he could easily replace him. I mentioned Cannon in another post and I think you can see what playing even in Portugal has done for his level already. MLS is just too low quality.
