@Garrick are you in AO Milwaukee? Have you taken part in the I-94 Cup?

As for Americans needing to get out, it's surely true. Unfortunately, it's pretty tough for Americans who aren't relatively affluent. We don't have the benefit of European geography to make international travel easy. Too bad the State Dept. keeps cutting funding for student travel grants...

Cost of travel overseas is absolutely obscene from the US.

The holiday thread in the Ale House blows my mind. I felt well(ish) traveled for having been all over the Caribbean and to Europe a few times, but it took me until my mid 20's before I had money to go anywhere except for the US and Canada...and I'm doing alright for myself.

Flights are just too damn expensive to make it work though, I mean, it's $1800 just for flights to Greece (I just picked a city randomly, Athens it is!). Many Americans can't afford that, let alone if more than one person is going.

We also don't get nearly the same time off. I've always had at least 3 weeks paid vacation a year (that's proper vacation, not sick wrapped in), and I feel like most people around here are surprised that I get that much, whereas most Europeans would probably see it as a rather small amount of vacation.

I just joined this year, so no haven't taken part yet.

Yeah. We can go to Canada easily, which is pretty similar culturally, so much that it's almost not even international travel. Most places in Mexico are a tough sell right now with all of the gang warfare. Lots of places in the Caribbean aren't exactly rosy, either.

And yes there are the working conditions, too... From a worker's point of view the US isn't a great place to be.

Here are ones for St. Louis:

A map of my town would be completely black but as you zoomed out you would see that it was the dot above the i in white written in 9000 font across the South.
