When people say quality full backs though I presume they’re talking about players who can both attack and defend to an extremely good level.

How many of them are there available and are they available at Everton’s budget? We were absolutely spoilt by Baines and Coleman in their primes who were not just Everton greats but two of the best in the league and in Europe. We’re not going to just pick up two like that for a pittance again any time soon. We bought Lucas Digne for 16 mill with a sky high pedigree ex Barcelona and Roma, France international with CL experience and he couldn’t get near the level Baines was at in his prime and massively struggled defensively.

Liverpool haven’t got a right back that can defend, United haven’t got a right back who can attack, City sold their left backs because they couldn’t defend, they now play centre backs there and often at right back too. Arsenal have Zinchenko and Ben White, neither of them primarily a fullback.

Yes we’d all like to find two perfect full backs but if the top 6 worth their unlimited budgets can’t find them why would Everton get them? Look at Patterson, a player with undoubted promise going forward, but can the fans stand a single defensive lapse from him? No.

In my view a full backs job is to defend first and foremost, and when he’s fit and in form Mykolenko can do that. There’s other ways for a team to attack than continuously trying to spring their left back free to cross it in.

My problem with Mykolenko is that in the majority of the games he is barely involved and it's like playing with a man less on the pitch. If we want to stop being a team constantly involved in relegation dogfights he'd be my number 1 to improve, such is his lack of quality.

And I agree there are other ways to attack than down the left but it doesn't half help the opposition to stop those other ways when they know Mykolenko isn't going to offer any threat.

If there is one area Dyche has excelled as opposed to previous managers, it’s that we are a threat down the middle. We play through balls and create a lot of chances centrally which is something we have always struggled to do almost every other manager. We are very oppressive with our press and force teams into mistakes. McNeil and Harrison are also very slick on the ball and can cut into the middle and cause problems.

The problem is our fullbacks have not only given freebie goals away, they don’t really assist in the attack whatsoever. Every time we fall behind it gets that much harder to play to our strengths because we can’t play consistently out wide. As a result teams will stack the middle and we are completely screwed because we don’t have pacy wingers that will beat players for crosses and our fullbacks are not the quality we need (at least not yet in terms of Myko and Patto).

If we don’t fall behind, I expect us to win almost every game (except against the top teams) because we can be oppressive in the middle and eventually we force something in. I expect few draws. We will fall behind if our fullbacks are not more consistent defensively and in attack.

He's done ok the last few games, he's not what we want from a left back, but, when you consider that the alternatives are Godfrey or Young, then he is by far the best option we have for the position. do we persevere with him, or, spend money we don't have on replacing him?. Hobson's choice really.

Those criticising him should remember what he's going through day in day out worrying about his homeland.
So if it lasts another 4 years we need to put up with poor performances and not criticise? No thanks. But there you’re in Patterson’s thread criticising him I’m not fans of either of them but Patterson is much better than mykolenko. Should think about Patterson worrying about you and davek 😂

Vitalii Mykolenko - 2023/24 Player Performance Thread

Thread Sponsor: @RAFUH
As much as i hate to single out players for criticism, Mykolenko is not Premier league quality, particularly in an attacking sense. Where i sit at Goodison, i see his performances up close and personal, well for 45 minutes anyway! He doesn't have a single attacking instinct, and it is stifling the team. With Young on the other flank, we are bereft of any full back who can bomb on, and give the opposition something to worry about. It also puts added pressure on McNeill and Harrison to "do something" with the ball every time, all on their own. I can't even say that Mykolenko and Young are rock solid defensively. Even a very poor Bournemouth played on our two full backs, as a way to get to our goal. We should get them off our books, and buy two very decent full backs, who can attack!

But interestingly, since Travenier did not attack as much, Myko moved as an inverted full-back and showcased some of his improved passing. Maybe having open field on both sides of him benefits us. Myko the new Phil Neville...

He tries, vrry hard, but for me he often gets lost , out of position, but some tines thus season he has had no midfield cover.

But I think he can improve.

Now he is getting a run of games you can see some confidence building. I think there is a decent player there but it’s just going to take some time

Now he’s getting a run of games? He started 42 league games in the season and a half before this one. Hasn’t improved going forward one bit.
