Played many a historical based (ancient greece) wargame over the years. Also made a star trek based war game which went down a storm at lunch times at school. A trainee teacher we had at the time, who had previously been manager of a games workshop, reckoned I'd make a fortune selling a rule book. And then lose it being sued by paramount.
I have to say,I'm not the least bit shocked by this

Tbh, Nids are my secondary 40k army just there because there are so many space marine players. My Jump Pack Chapter are my true love, painted in the style of seagulls. Genestealer Cults are really good, though there is a brand new edition dropping soon
What would you recommend for new or returning players to get involved?

That idiot Benteke thought he'd get me this week, daft prick!

Waaaaawammah

Had a large collection of Lord of the Rings war hammer when I was a kid. My poor parents must have spent a fortune on it.

Spent quite a few evenings playing HeroQuest and Space Crusade round a school-friends house. We even experimented with Kellar's Keep and Return Of The Witch Lord. It just seemed like fun.

But then he kept talking about things I was uncomfortable with such as Advanced HeroQuest and Warhammer and it didn't seem like fun anymore. I managed to get away but I still feel guilty about those who didn't.

Like the concept and the art style but as ale and ciggies for my parents were more important than any sort of pocket money when I was a kid and I had to give up my paper round as I collected the payments and was told I was getting jumped, owning anything that cost actual money wasn't an option.

One of my mates is the biggest distributor of warhammer stuff in the UK. He started off supplying it to fund his own hobby then it all just took off. Now it's his main income and he has to watch the VAT threshold so he must be doing ok.

Played a lot of Warhammer games; Total War and Dawn of War. Not at all interested in the little figures though.

What's his name Rob? Not one of the lads from Element Games is it?
