Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

I see this bolded bit quite often...

How exactly does it raise our profile?

Formerly good player waddles off into the sunset to play with his former club before retirement.

I am not seeing the benefit to be honest.

He is 31, he is not retirement age yet, come on. Previously we've had the likes of Gascoigne, Ginola and Hughes, all have been at the glue stage, but Rooney should have 2 years. Like i say no pace to start with. Whats the worst that can happen?

As for profile you see how the media swoon over him, maybe just because they know they can bash him at some point, but he is a world renowned footballer, enough said.

if that were true we should be giving koeman a game too

See above. :)

hes an old 31, in football terms id put him at about 38

The second he leaves United for a clubs like us, his marketing value plummets dramatically.

People aren't going to start caring about Everton, they're going to stop caring about Wayne Rooney.
So he wouldn't guarantee more column inches about Everton, Sky interest, foreign media interest etc?

I don't want him back and I certainly don't think the club should be spending money to bring him back.

There's also something about him leaving to spend his peak years at utd and them coming back to finish his career when he's on the decline that doesn't sit well.

I disagree. The media swoon over Manchester United's Wayne Rooney. The big draw there is Manchester United not Wayne Rooney. Its not like he is this iconic player or anything, he is a generally quiet lad who was/is good at football. His England days will be coming to an end so he wont even have the captain of England tag.

There is the possibility of more shirt sales but seeing as Kitbag give us a lump sum regardless of what we sell that is a moot point.

The first month or so after he signs sure. then maybe some more if he plays brilliantly for us and he wins stuff. If he comes to us and carries on the way he was at United in the last few seasons then people will lose interest pretty quickly.

I can't remember the last time I saw him have a good game. 2, 3 years ago was it? No thanks.

to be fair, he's not a central midfielder. United have such an abundance of them that they could afford to let a player as good as snides go. I think he could still do a good job coming on as a second striker to support lukaku, or link up with him, playing through balls from a bit deeper.

His footballing brain hasn't gone so i'd fancy him to still open up spaces, create chances and be in the right area. We definitely need 3 more attacking options in the summer imo. He'd bring more than just his ability on the pitch to us, but i wouldn't be going too crazy over the price.

I guess the smoking and early start hasn't helped but it's not like he is always injured. He hasn't played much this year, so you can up his starting age to 17.. We know our main forward will still be Rom, he can be used along side Mirallas/Lookman. If it doesn't work so be it, you don't know if you don't try.

We would clearly get that but it may not all be positive press. I read an article in the Guardian recently with the headline "Rooney is Finished" or something akin to that. I'm not sure that help the "Everton brand". We should sign players for sporting reasons primarily and if we want a brand identity we should be looking to create that from within. In my view it diminishes us if the only way we can create broader interest is by signing players who, despite possibly having something to offer, are most definitely past their prime. Former glories at different clubs cannot offer the same impact as glory with the club. We should focus on achieving the latter while making the most of our current resources to promote ourselves (we have players like Lukaku, Funes Mori, Baines and, to a lesser degree, Barkley who have an international profile, for example) rather than spending big money on fees and wages on faded stars, in my opinion.

Not enough to make it worth paying a large fee and large wages for him. In my opinion.

Plus the additional media interest is only going to land us in the exact same situation as Man United are currently in. One famous player draining the wage bill and hogging the limelight whilst the media ask why he isn't playing. The answer being he isn't good enough anymore.

Who would we drop though? Barkley? He's not going to come here, take a big drop in wages and want to sit on the bench. We've been liked with Tielemans who also plays in that deep lying forward position and, for me, he offers better value in terms of fee, wages and potential longevity at the club.
