Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

How the hell is signing him a wrong message? It is likely the best message we can make this summer. If Rooney comes here, he wants to play here. He rejects big big money in China, MLS or Middle East, he rejects just to sit on the bench in MU, where he has no motivation to achieve anything else. He would reject them for us. If he does it, he clearly wants to play here and would likely have that motivation to help this club finally to achieve something big. He likely accepts a wage in our wage structure and likely would be on the same wage as Romelu. And he still deserves it. He assisted or scored a goal every 120 minutes this year. Romelu every 103 minutes. Barkley every 213 minutes. 14.4M twitter followers. Everton as a club has 1 million of followers. He is clearly one of the biggest legends in the history of English football, massive name and still is a great player and is only 31. He is exactly the player we need to keep here players like Lukaku or Barkley and to send a message to other quality players to come here. Massive difference if you meet Valencia and Kone or Rooney on the training ground. Who the hell says no?
That's a whole lot of likely.

If you take into account marketing potential + footballing ability alone, I think this is a no brainer.

I don't think we are in a position yet to attract anyone in the world class bracket - Rooney will be coming here as he supports Everton and is from the local area.

He is not world class any more, he is barely good enough. He "supports" Everton (dont get me started...) and i couldn't give a toss where he is from. His being a massive blue and a local lad didnt stop him upping sticks at the first chance of asking did it?

What marketing potential is this then? I have already said why that is a bit of a myth. Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is the brand, not Rooney himself and shirt sales will make no difference.

If Koeman wants him then fine but I dont have to be happy about it and I will just treat him as any other player (I am sure he will be delighted at this...)

Regardless of his ability of his supposed marking potential my main issue with him is that he will be a divisive character. Usually when a new player signs the fans will be 100% behind the player (for a few weeks anyway...) with Rooney that may not be the case.

It tells Davies and Barkley that they can bugger off and play for one of the "big" boys as silly little Everton will always bring you back when you are finished so that you can tick off some items from your footballing bucket list once their real career is over.

He is hardly going to be convincing Lukaku to stay either is he?

he's the one that will add that 0.00000000001% needed to get the contract signed, lukaku's agent referred to yesterday.

We need to sell it like we bring Rooney home to give the world the message that next great young Blues like Ross and Tom can stay here for their whole career to achieve great things and Rooney is here to help them to achieve exactly that. Rooney clearly is not finished at all, he is still likely a better player than Barkley (and I love Ross!).

The message to Lukaku would be clear: no more Valencia or Kone to play with you in attack. You can play with Rooney, a legend of this game. We need more than Rooney though, true.

Many many people were doubting Zlatan, even early on in the season he was getting loads of stick. He is still good but nowhere near as good as he was.

Same affect Rooney would have for us.
No chance. Zlatan has been world class for over a decade, and still very much is. Rooney had about 3-5 years of being one of the best, and that ended about 3 years ago.

It's a ridiculous idea. I have always liked the lad and never joined in the condemnation of him. But linking us with an over the hill fading super star is just plain bad for our image. It's stale thinking from a few seasons back. We had the best of Rooney when he was here first time around practically, because the lad was pretty much the finished product when he left. To end up here at the end of his career with a player who couldn't hold a light to that 17/18 year old would be an embarrassment, not to mention a huge waste of cash and a poor signal to send out to our youngsters coming through and the first teamers we want to keep hold of.

There can be no second chance for Rooney even if he wanted it...which I highly doubt, tbf to him.

Not sure this would be the best use of money.
Heart says bring him back, doesn't matter at what cost. But realistically, I don't think he's anywhere near the same player that he once was. That said, inside, I know I'd be ecstatic if he did return.

How does signing an old declining player who has spent almost all of his career at a rival club show young blues that they can stay at Everton all of their careers? Doesn't make sense.

I love the club, the history of the club, lots of our ex-players including some not great ones and also love having young blues playing in the team. Man Utd's top goalscorer doesn't really register for me when I think of Everton or the above. If he hadn't played a few games for us a million years ago I don't think anybody would be wanting us to spunk a load of money on him.
