Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

Signing a thirty something player is not saying anything about where the club is at present...it is simply a signing that the manager thinks may make his squad stronger. The cost and the wishes of the player are the two imponderables.

Our squad also contains Holgate, Lookman, Barkley, Yakubu, Davies,Besic,Gana,McCarthy who are all still under 26. We are linked with Michael Keane who is only twenty three.
We have already shed a number of older players and in the summer will lose at least two more in Jags and Kone.
The squad is well balanced between young and older players.

If Rooney comes I am happy, if he doesn't then that is fine too, but to suggest that a player like Rooney at 31 years of age has nothing to contribute to an Everton is so silly it can't be taken seriously. Certainly not the player he was, but he would add a dimension to our team in football intelligence that we don't have at the moment.
The experience he would provide in a European campaign alone would be immense.
Rooney is still a top player, not world class anymore, but would still be an asset.
Crikey!

A great post.

Rooney coming back would be humilating for Everton. If he's any ambition left he'll go to a mid-table Premier League club who'll guarantee him being their star player, top earner and give him 30 plus starts a season. Do one Wayne, let that be the end of it now.
Humiliating really?????
Look at what a 35 year old Zlatan is doing, he is making Utd into winners again, why? because he is a winner himself!! Just like Rooney is a winner and who is 3 years younger!!

The suggestion is that "his legs are gone and he can't run", he may have lost some pace. Who in our current team in an attacking midfield role or striker position would you say is better tha Rooney other than Lukaku if he is not going to improve our side? The stats for last season and this suggest he would improve our team.

Barkley is a far better player currently. And he's improving. Rooney is doing the opposite.

As well as this, there are dozens of players we could sign who are hungrier, fitter, faster, much much much cheaper and capable of producing better football than Rooney now can. I don't know what stats you are referring to, but I think he has 2 premier league goals in nearly an entire calendar year.

Just because he's better than Valencia doesn't mean investing a huge amount of money into a currently average player, who is only going to get worse, is a good idea.

As i've said earlier in the thread, FFP means we can only boost our wage bill by so much each year. Blowing a huge portion of this summers increase on a bit-part player like Rooney would be a very bad idea, in my opinion.

We need to sell it like we bring Rooney home to give the world the message that next great young Blues like Ross and Tom can stay here for their whole career to achieve great things and Rooney is here to help them to achieve exactly that. Rooney clearly is not finished at all, he is still likely a better player than Barkley (and I love Ross!).

The message to Lukaku would be clear: no more Valencia or Kone to play with you in attack. You can play with Rooney, a legend of this game. We need more than Rooney though, true.

He is clearly not finished? Based off what exactly? He isn't dynamic enough to play up front anymore and is being shoehorned into a number 10 role which he isn't particularly suited to either, for me he isn't "cute" enough for that role.

Funnily enough I would say Barkley is a much better player at this point in time and unlike you I don't love Ross!

I doubt Lukaku cares if Rooney is a legend of the game (he isn't like...) as he probably thinks he is better than him anyway. The message is more a case of "we cant get anyone young and vibrant to play alongside you so you can play with this past it bloke for a year until your inevitable move to a "bigger" club. If you have any doubts "Wazza" will tell you it's a no brainer to move clubs.

Lukaku isn't thick by the way. If Rooney ends up back at Everton he will know the reasons why, we wont need to con him.

Zlatan didn't leave Man Utd years ago either claiming he was this massive United fan.

If he comes back he comes back, but more than anything it just shows me that football and indeed Everton lack any soul. I want him to retire from football not knowing what it was like to captain this great club, to score a derby winner (or even a derby goal), or to lift a trophy with us. He doesn't deserve to have any of that.

How does signing an old declining player who has spent almost all of his career at a rival club show young blues that they can stay at Everton all of their careers? Doesn't make sense.

I love the club, the history of the club, lots of our ex-players including some not great ones and also love having young blues playing in the team. Man Utd's top goalscorer doesn't really register for me when I think of Everton or the above. If he hadn't played a few games for us a million years ago I don't think anybody would be wanting us to spunk a load of money on him.
He is not old, he is 31. And the Club needs to sell it like. I can see Bill Kenwright saying things like this on the press conference when introducing him: "We clearly weren't good enough to keep Wayne here to allow him to achieve such a great things like winning the league or even the Champions League. Now we are on the way up. Wayne is here to help the Club to grow into one of the biggest's on this planet to ensure that future generations of Everton fans can realistically hope for the biggest things season after season. Wayne is here to help us create the mentality of winning, the mentality of success, the mentality where our next generations will want to spend their whole careers to achieve everything they want in their football careers. Our son is back."

I think it makes perfect sense. Rooney was hopefully the last talented Toffee to ever jump to another English club. This should be the message.

Mate I think you have some deep rooted issues that need addressing

Based off statistics. Rooney has an assist or goal every 120 mins in this season. Lukaku every 105 mins. And Lukaku is one of the best players in the league. You can try to find these statistics for Barkley, Bolasie, Mirallas, Valencia, Kone.

In terms of what they are supposed to do, I'd suggest that assist/chance created per minute that Bolasie and Barkley are doing very well this season.

Again. There are other players in the world....

I don't want him back because he's a blue but because he's still a quality footballer

I genuinely despise him. I have never hid that.

From a footballing viewpoint obviously. I don't know him in real life or anything.

In purely footballing terms he deserves nothing from us and is everything that is wrong with football.

It's slightly different though. Zlatan scored 70+ goals last calendar year. Rooney grabbed about 10.
He played every game in a poor league in his favoured position whilst Rooney was playing midfield!! My point is play Rooney in the number 10 he provides lukaku with so many more chances and goals!!
