Signing a thirty something player is not saying anything about where the club is at present...it is simply a signing that the manager thinks may make his squad stronger. The cost and the wishes of the player are the two imponderables.
Our squad also contains Holgate, Lookman, Barkley, Yakubu, Davies,Besic,Gana,McCarthy who are all still under 26. We are linked with Michael Keane who is only twenty three.
We have already shed a number of older players and in the summer will lose at least two more in Jags and Kone.
The squad is well balanced between young and older players.
If Rooney comes I am happy, if he doesn't then that is fine too, but to suggest that a player like Rooney at 31 years of age has nothing to contribute to an Everton is so silly it can't be taken seriously. Certainly not the player he was, but he would add a dimension to our team in football intelligence that we don't have at the moment.
The experience he would provide in a European campaign alone would be immense.
Rooney is still a top player, not world class anymore, but would still be an asset.
