Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

He's spent many years at youth level, dedication to Everton and honing his skill. Played numerous times for the first team and scoring.

I've not done that, don't think you have as well.

He has done more than be a supporter, he has and most likely be an Everton player again. A local boy done good, coming back home.

How does that make him more of a fan though? So he was a fan who happened to be much, much better at football than all of us, and subsequently became an employee at the club. That doesn't make him "more of a fan", it just makes him more successful.

A fans dream is to play for the club he supported, he has done that. He is the ultimate fan for achieving that dream.

Obviously he has, but that has nothing to do with him being a "better fan", it's because he was extremely talented. Is Jose Baxter a better Everton fan than all of us as well?

Fair enough for answering.

That's a very strange concept of being a fan that you have there though.

Funnily enough it is my area! (Not with footballing teams to be fair...yet)

The marketing appeal is not based on Wayne Rooney though. That's what people need to grasp. The appeal is on Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and to a lesser extent England's captain Wayne Rooney. As soon as he comes to us he loses both of those things. People generally follow football clubs, not players (You will have one or two exceptions, Rooney is not one of them as he is as charismatic as a piece of wet cardboard). he is not a Beckham or a Ronaldo who are advertisers dream men, he is a shy, plain looking lad from Liverpool who was marketable because of his footballing ability (which may not be there any more, that debate will rumble on) and because he played for a team who people care about.

He has grown up I will give him that. In a strange way though that has also taken away some of his appeal. There are so many examples of him being unprofessional in the past that seem to have been glossed over.

I agree to a point. But in football terms he's still a big name. We need big names if we're gonna make a dent on and off the field.

See Man City when they signed Robinho, that led to Tevez, which led to Aguero.

It's a statement that says we can bring in a name, quality, and pay them. As we don't have champions league it's a route we need to go down.

Who should we sign that is a bigger name and would come to Everton that would convince Lukaku of our ambitions ?
I think the exact opposite.

We employed a director of football to do a job so I think let him do it. Rooney is a has been he is almost ten years older than Rom
We have signed plenty of has beens in the past Gasgoine, Ginola, washed up footballers. Signing Rooney means nothing has changed.
Rom wants some quality coming into the club, as do the fans, Rooney isnt the type of player we want its a backwards step for the club
Not good enough for United but apparently good enough for us ?

Any fan that is using ' we are boss bloos mate, and Wayne is one of us lar ' is half the problem with this beaut, he's absolutely useless and would take is backwards, not forward. Lets move on from UTD cast offs, please. He offers zero technical benefits and will sponge off us whilst banging on about how its a dream come true.

It is mad isn't it?

I have gone round in circles on here about the reasons why we shouldn't sign him etc but it's obvious that we wont change the minds of those that want him.

Realistically my feelings on him come down to this...

I am of an age where Rooney leaving us was the death knell of any romanticism regarding football.

I remember discussions at the time and supporters of other clubs were going on about Rooney leaving to join a "big club" and me saying at the time there is no chance he would leave. He is a blue, he is ours, he loves us etc. Didn't expect him to stay forever but I had to laugh at those know nothings who said he was leaving that summer.

And then he goes. First chance he gets. A little bit of football dies.

Fast forward 15 years (!) later and he wants to play for us again.

The romance may have died but I did always love how we had a bit of pride as a club. We took knocks but just got on with it. However now we are seemingly bending over backwards for him, people getting giddy at the thought of him pulling on a blue shirt again. "Yay! Wazza is coming "home"!" It's incredibly disappointing to me.
Wayne Rooney polarizes fans opinions like nobody else, not just us Evertonians but Manure and England fans too. I don't agree with yours mate, but I totally respect your right to an opinion and also that you're consistent in your opinion. I might have felt the same had I witnessed the shirt kissing episode rather than enjoying a Goodison sabbatical at the time. Who knows.

As it happens, I don't really give one about him as an individual, I only care if he's right for Everton. There's pros and cons on that score. In the ideal world I would much prefer we brought in younger and better players than Rooney. But I'm not convinced that we can either afford those players or whether they would be prepared to join us. I suppose we'll find out this summer.

I was therefore of the opinion that, if we could get the right deal financially, and that he understood that he was coming here as part of a squad, then he would be a decent addition. However, I am more than a little concerned by his injury record over the last 12 months and I am now doubting myself.

Plus, I have big concerns over match day atmosphere if he does come. People with the same opinions as yourself, of which I'm sure there are many who attend the game regularly, will have Rooney on a very short leash. I don't think he'll be constantly booed, and I'm pretty sure they'll be cheering if he scores the winner against the RS. But he'll also be permanently on probation and elements of the crowd will be quickly on his back if he's having a poor game or misses a sitter. It can create a hostile atmosphere which may affect the rest of the team performance.

At the end of the day, the opinions of you and I are irrelevant. Whether the club decide to sign Rooney or not, we as fans, have to trust their judgment. I'll be renewing my season ticket next season either way.

He still dedicated his youth career to us like Rooney, and played for the first team, like Rooney. Being a better player and being a better fan are two completely separate things.

It's not, he has dedicated years of his life to the club through training while we have been to a few games and type words on a football forum. He is more of a fan than me and you.

Plus, it's still possible for him to live the ultimate fans dream of scoring the winning goal in the fa cup final for the team he supports.

Schneiderlin is not good enough for United, shall we get rid of him?? That's basically what you are saying.
