2017/18 Wayne Rooney

Stupid post. Looked sluggish against a pub team. We missed a focal point to our attack tonight and if people would rather Rooney's 'workrate' than Rom's goals, I despair.

Rooney was by no means the worst tonight but to try and use his 'workrate' as a positive is pathetic.

O no, not a positive, there were positives in that game, such as several players making a home debute in game we won and kept a clean sheet. As for Rooneys workrate, plenty of times Lukakus workrate was none existent, in fact a game like last night, at times he would be at his worse, no movement at all apart form moving his arms up and down and pointing.
Yeah Rooney wasnt great, but we seen at times Lukaku be at lot worse

What we saw tonight is what we have got: a player who has no position, cannot hack it in his new 'role' as a 'number 10', is never going to be the Rooney we knew, and who is trying too hard to prove he is still the Rooney we knew.

I cannot see one reason why he should have stayed on the pitch tonight, what his contribution is expected to be, what his best position is now that he is (way) past his best, or for what reason (apart from the fact he is 'Wayne Rooney'), that he should be selected again.

This man is finished as a top player and those who are fawning over his return and praising him for 'trying' are deluding themselves.

He has nothing to offer on the pitch and all we have got is the Man Utd Rooney they were desperate to offload - not the one we were desperate to keep 13 long years ago.

I love the romance of him returning but if he's our replacement for Lukaku we are going to find it very difficult to have a good season. Unless he turns around two years of decline of course.

Who gives a damn about work rate when you've got a player banging in 25 goals. If we're already onto 'at least he works hard' then it's grim times ahead.

Nobody is seriously suggesting that Wayne is going to fill Lukaku's boots.

He oozes class and he's a great addition to the squad, but he isn't an out-and-out striker and he won't get half as many goals as Lukaku did for us last season.

We all recognise that if we are going to get into the top 6 then we need a Benteke type player who'll bag us a goal every two games on average.

Let's be frank with ourselves lads. David's post sums the situation up in a nutshell.
