You don't go in to civil service to make a huge wedge, the private sector generally pays more for the equivalent job but less in vacation (7.8 hours per paycheck for me, currently) and sick time (3.9 hrs per paycheck; stacks indefinitely but rate never increases) accrual.

All about retirement benefits mainly; a state pension that pays you bi-monthly, like a "normal" job until you're 6 ft under, never runs out. Also have a government 457 investment plan, which has its own benefits and drawbacks over a 401k. Still not gonna' divulge my income, though.
People I know in the civil service get paid obscene amounts for quite simple jobs, purely based on length of time served. Add in the ridiculous pension contributions and their laughing for life..

I worked 16 years in the Youth/Community/Mental Health lines of work and the work life balance was terrible. Took the risk to change line of work before we started a family so i could be around more and landed a civil service job ( ALB to be exaxt but the same benefits). It's the best thing i ever did. I really enjoy my work and care about what we try to do as an organisation.

I took a £1k paycut to take the job but when i stacked that up against the employer pension contribution it was a no brainer. I got more into my pension in 1 year in the civil service than the rest of my career prior.

I joined at SO grade in June 2021, got a DP role in April this year then just started a grade 7 role. Seen my first payslip and the employer pension contribution for this month alone was £1,345, absolutely crazy.

It quite insane isn't it! 25% pension contributions generally I think it is. I've been pushing the missus to get a job at the births/deaths/marriages office in Southport for years.. Pension mainly being the main point as you say!
