Who could replace Martinez ?

Maybe, but he knows that we've got a good squad so if push comes to shove and he has to change things then a new manager would have to pick up ~12 points in 10 games to more or less guarantee survival

Kenwright might have a soppy smile but he's a tough old bugger and will want to give his choice of manager every chance.
He left it late when he got rid of walter smith and got lucky with a few wins to stay up.
With the sky money now i don't think he will take the risk

Should we have kept walker on in 94? Should we have persisted with Smith?

You can't use a couple of examples to prove anything as they can usually be countered with a contrasting evidence. Sometimes you have to go with your gut. Moyes never got us embroiled in a relegation battle even in 03/04 - this time the abyss beckons.
Come on kev, we are only half way through the season, we are not embroiled in a relegation battle.

Would you have got rid of Moyes in his second season?
You're not the first to say this but it's not the same scenario is it? Moyes took over a team that was relegation candidates and in that second season the squad was quite frankly, [Poor language removed] bar one or two.

He hadn't even really started to try and build the squad at that point.

The squad we have now and the squad Martinez inherited is a very good one.

A couple of weeks ago I'd have nodded in agreement with that (and probably said something like it). The attitude and demeanour of the players (and manager, tbf) has utterly shocked me subsequently - to the point that I see your scenario as wistful fantasy.

There's nothing I'd like better for you to be right and me wrong on this, believe me. But I just dont see kenwright acting in isolation on football matters. I believe the future sale of the club is all likely to be mixed up with any managerial decision in the coming weeks and it'll cost Martinez his job.

Hope I'm wrong. Viva hope!

The future sale of the club is tied to Premiership survival not success prior to sale. Any newcoming owner with significant funds would significantly revise the playing squad anyway, so as long as survival is guaranteed then the value of the club does not change much other than if we were to (i) qualify for the CL or (ii) win the Europa League - both of which even with the most blue tinted spec's seem unlikely scenarios this season.

I agree if the financial "value" of the club was to be damaged then Martinez is in trouble, but in the absence of relegation I don't see that.

No Christmas/New Year message from the leader. Speaks volumes to me like.

I think he'll allow this to drift another two weeks tops - all the while sounding out possible caretakers/replacements. If it isn't showing signs of improvement (which it wont because these players are determined to tank these games) he'll sack Martinez and install his successor.

IMO, although Kenwright might let things drift longer than that, Messrs Green and Earl will be adamant the slide is halted for the sake of their share value.

Got a feeling he'll stick by him mate til atleast 30 games in or so, although I agree it's very weird the silence from him.

The only other time I can remember a manager openly having lost the dressing room was walker in 94. Even smith and kendall in 83 weren't facing open player revolts as Martinez is now.

He has to go. The prospect of falling into the championship is too real.

Relegation or not we can't afford to finish mid table. Too many of our best players will leave and the writing for me will be on the wall- the likes of Coleman, Mirallas, lukaku etc. Go and he brings in carp like cleverly to replace him and we go down the villa road to mid table obscurity.

With the players at his disposal anything less than top 10 would be a disaster of a season.

... although I agree it's very weird the silence from him

I don't think that's weird at all.

One of the most well worn cliches in football is the chairman saying "The manager has my full support" so Kenwright will keep a low profile and delay having to say anything until it's totally necessary.

*waves wet finger in the air - he won't say that unless we lose to West Ham, Citeh and WBA.

I know, I know, he'll be on the telly tomorrow saying "Roberto has my full support" just to prove me wrong.
