Duckweed is a pig. If you have it on a garden pond get rid, but you'll need to do it daily for weeks as it regenerates very quickly. It stops sunlight penetrating the lower layers, thus preventing photosynthesis further down the water column. The creatures that survive off submerged plants therefore suffer. Deoxygenation is also quite likely.My little back garden pond is the same at the moment.
