The football world has evolved a lot since 2004, but notwithstanding that, Martinez has at his playing disposal, a playing XI of quality Moyes could but dream of. How Martinez deploys his team's qualities/personnel is what continues to provide me misgiving. I genuinely think he has gone 'corporate' on us...a conservative, no risk, process over product mantra. I think he's lost his bottle. This is not necessarily a permanent disposition ... I hope he re-finds his old mojo again soon
I think last season was a Thursday:Sunday learning curve.

Europe was good but we suffered from the travelling times aspect.

I have a hunch we're going back in the right direction.

My view is, and perhaps this is too simplistic which I appreciate, that if Moyes could get to 4th with basically free transfers, Martinez can do it with the resources he has.

Just not this particular season. I know people bemoan the lack of signing a creative mid and I understand that - but how many other teams have them and are willing to sell. They tried hard for Yarmolenko but ultimately his club wouldn't sell. Which leaves who else? No good signing players for the sake of it when the one you want may be available in January or even free next summer.

Perhaps Yarmolenko has been identified as the absolute one for us, so Roberto is playing his long game rather than than splashing money for old rope - where did that tactic land us and Walter Smith?

Moyes got us to 4th on a brand of uber KITAP1.
Martinez, given the same squad at the same time etc etc etc Given Ossies quotes on the 'easy' Martinez training regime and due to his reluctance Re set pieces especially defensive ones this innate frailty would quite likely have got them relegated.

I wouldn't want Moyes back for many reasons. Martinez achieved 72Pts which would've got 4th on a number of occasions but who can say that he did or didn't piggy back on some of the ground work laid by Moyes.

Short version; He could/might...but I don't think he will.

What's KITAP1?

Depends on Spurs / RS / United or Arsenal having a very ordinary season at the same time as us having an incredible season.

Not completely convinced yet that the chap could organise a binge drinking festival in Yeatses.

Acronym I coined on Toffeeweb the ultimate distillation and description of Moyesishness.

keep it tight and pinch 1

Martinez might be, pass it about and concede 1
I see.

I prefer BTETAS: Batter These Everton, These Are.........

But from what I've seen this year so far, we're improved from the dire rubbish we were served last term.

Always said for us to get in the top 4 we will need an outstanding season, and 1 of the top will need to struggle.

Sadly finances dictate everything in the game

There are cracks in the top 4 armour (imo). City and Arsenal are nailed on but Untied and Chelski (as both currently take the field) are vulnerable. However if Mourinho throws caution to the wind and plays his 'young guns', they are a shoo-in. Liverpool are not good enough to fill any vacuum, but as Martinez currently structures us, neither are we (by miles)...Swansea????

He's got the best opportunity of any of our previous 3-4 managers, albeit in a tougher environment than ever. However you like to dress it up football and success in the Premier League is 80-90% determined by the level of investment in players. Pellegrini and Mourhino would fair much, much worse with the spending ability of the likes of Everton.....they simply wouldn't compete at top four level regularly.
You need a determined, tactically-sound manager with a clear long term plan if you have limited resources. Martinez and Moyes both have/had that in my opinion albeit in different ways. Give him the 5 years without forced sales and he genuinely think RM could do it.
