World Cup 2022

I personally think that the 'It is too late to speak out about it' argument is not 100% as clear an argument as people think it is.

The fact is, unless Qatar was physically unable to stage the world cup, it was never going to get moved. There has been a lot of negative talk since it was announced. It is now more prevalent because it is happening right now, the articles about it are now put on the 'front page', rather than page 25, again, because it is happening right now.

Also, when is it best to highlight something is wrong, when everyone is watching. I liked Lineker's line 'I am here to report on the world cup, not support it'. That would be the same as Roy Keane and the rest of them. I very much doubt many people agree with it being in Qatar, some on here will be watching it whilst also disagreeing with the location, is that not also ironic, hypocritical, etc. (I include myself in that).

Would we have all preferred it to be boycotted, probably enough to make that a possible argument but it isn't and one of the best places to 'protest' is while being there.

The explanation given from Peter Walton re offside calls and not focusing on the wider passage of play is that 'the semi-automated offside system already factors all of that in' suggesting that we should just trust the system, essentially. I'm not all that convinced, especially when FIFA has already pretty much admitted that the system failed when it ruled out Argentina's second goal yesterday..

Roy Keane stood on TV telling everyone that the WC should not have been in Qatar, whilst being paid to work at said WC was slightly ironic.

Don't really agree with that. Journalists have to cover world events. A war correspondent doesn't have to agree with a regime to cover the conflict, they're paid to cover it by their employer (and please don't grab the low hanging "hurr world cup is different to war durr" fruit).

Yeah that's complete bollocks. The whole point of VAR was to remove the opacity, not this shambles

It really is, though. Reporting on war is usually carried out by somebody who is called a "war correspondent" and will know and agree that they could be visiting a war-torn country to perform their role.

Roy Keane is a football pundit who regularly provides punditry on Sky Sports, he has chosen to go over to Qatar as a part of the ITV pundit team, where he has then decided to declare that the WC should not be there due to reasons which he believes in. I find this slightly ironic and it dilutes his comments. Had he stayed at home and published a story on how he didn't want to get involved with the WC, due to his beliefs, it would have had a stronger effect.

So you want no TV nor radio coverage then? Cos thats the logical conclusion to your point. Keane is paid by ITV for his work. As are the producers and presenters and everyone else involved with their broadcasting.

Now Neville, taking their shilling directly is a different kettle of fish.

Not once have I said this, I said that Keane spouting on TV that the WC should not have been held in a country, whilst he is in that country being paid to talk about said WC, is slightly ironic. Which it is.

Ok. So you would prefer no one to say anything about it?

He isn't getting paid by Qatar or FIFA though, so it's kind of irrelevant. I'd much prefer people speak out than just smile and pretend everything is rosy, wherever they are doing it from

I think the media and news outlets have said enough, they did the exact same during the Russia WC and that didn't stop it going ahead, nor did it stop the current war they are active in now. Qatar will continue to live by their beliefs post WC, also.

I'd much rather the pundits and presenters just get on with their jobs and stop trying to make empty statements, for a bit of clout. Keane actually didn't say anything of context, he just said that the WC should not have been there, which says nothing.

Still not seen one second of the tournament. Will be watching the England game on Friday if I remember. Has it been any good?

Its been pretty good. One of the best games was actually a 0 0, Denmark and Tunisia. A few decent shocks. England look good.
