I doubt it will end in a pumping, but the thought of Mbappe vs England’s defence isn’t that encouraging.

Fair to say, they’re gonna have to raise their game a notch or three to get through.

Lucky for England that none of their defenders are on a yellow and all cards are rescinded after the quarter finals. That's one free hit each on Mbappe.

A hit on Mbappe will get you a red card at this world cup.

I do appreciate the desperation though.

I'm not sure where you're getting desperation from. I appreciate that it's very difficult to subdue Mbappe. But given that my entire interaction with this sham of a world cup is a couple of tactics podcasts I find interesting and GoT, I'm genuinely not that arsed.

I am not confident at all, we will see what happens. We have shown that we easily have enough up top to trouble France but Maguire and Stones handling what France have, is very worrying.

Walker Vs Mbappe sounds tasty though, looking forward seeing who wins the races they have.

As a neutral - alright, I'm kidding nobody as an Irishman - I think it's an intriguing clash. On the face of it, France are the better side. Mbappe, right now, appears to be ready to crown himself as the successor to Messi and Ronaldo. Griezmann is always a threat and Giroud is a very effective battering ram that brings the more elegant speedsters into play.

However, is the French midfield all that? I'm not so sure that they'll monopolise possession in ways the Spanish or Luka Modric would against England. And let's not get started on Lloris who is now a huge liability.

So, while I have major doubts about the English midfield's ability to maintain control against quality sides, and while I don't think Maguire and Stones can be completely relied upon to keep things tight, I think England have a good chance.

Mbappe has a tendency to showboat. That'll need to be curbed if France are to win. If England can get this to penalties, Pickford would be my choice to win it. I think England can win this - but it'll be their greatest tournament victory since beating Argentina in 2002 and, probably, in all honesty, their biggest since actually winning the World Cup final in 1966.

The bigger question to me is: are they mentally capable of embracing that?

Good assessment.

I honestly think this is the match of the tournament. Brazil ought to make their way to the final, and I think the winner of France / England is favourite to join them.

Struggling to see beyond it being France, but you make a good argument for where England might nick it.

I'm not an England supporter, but there's no reason they can't win this now. A team full of CL players and the richest FA in the world. Anything less than a Semi final is an under achievement for them. Can be mentally weak though and imo a sub par manager.
