Every single person I know who went to Russia said it was the best they’ve done.

I understand the overlying issues of awarding it to Russia, and of course it was bribery, they’ve already alluded to it. But they bent over backwards to accommodate fans and make them feel welcome. They made it about the fans.

Qatar, everything about it is wrong and I completely agree with you about it being a footnote.
I don’t think FIFA are done with hosting in a Muslim country, but I think next time they’ll go somewhere it’s more relaxed like Morocco, provided they have agreements in place.

Oh by "safe" I meant a country that doesn't have the sort of stuff going on that Qatar does

If there's a country that isn't as repressive as Qatar (regardless of the religion the country in question has) then I'm sure FIFA will consider them and that's fair for them to do so

Qatar is a veritable jambalaya of tournament destroying issues all in one serving (misogyny, homophobia, mistreatment of workers, white elephant stadiums, oppressive weather, restrictive rules against booze, having to move it to the winter etc)

This is a big issue I agree

It's very hard to enjoy sport as a visitor in that sort of situation

I remember the people of Lille clearly not wanting us there
for that Europa game back in 14/15 and the atmosphere was kind of "off" for the whole trip as a result. It's better when you're wanted and you can actually have some fun

Why? It was the police who were out of order, the locals were great. Spent the night with them.

I have a mate who is heading out tomorrow for Qatar, I told him no drinking in the stadiums, he said "Yes, but THREE HOURS BEFOREHAND AND an hour after!"

Just sent him this glorious news.

This is absolutely shambolic by literally everyone involved. I understand the significance of the "once every 4 years" thing but players really should just go home. Take a nice month long holiday and get back to their leagues.

I think the awarding of United 2026, and then Spain/Portugal & Uruguay-Argentina 2030, makes me believe that they’ve fully learned their lessons.

The message FIFA are trying to send out completely contradicts that Qatar 2022 sends out. It’s exactly the opposite of Equality and inclusivity, sadly.

The thing which will hurt FIFA most will be the sponsors. They pay huge amounts and which ever stance you have, the way Qatar have recently shafted Budweiser makes me believe they may get some backlash.

They can say they’ve tried a Middle Eastern World Cup now, it’s not saying Arabic counties are out, but they won’t in the Middle East after this, surely?

No one should have to fear for their life going to a World Cup.
