It's now being reported that alcohol will still be available to buy inside the private sponsors' hospitality suites in the stadiums. In other words if you are rich enough, all the VIPs, invited guests and business partners will be able to enter the stadium and drink in their private lounges (no doubt on expenses) - but the fans who paid for their tickets won't be. This is brilliant the gentrification of international football is now complete. Long past following England myself.

I have a mate who is heading out tomorrow for Qatar, I told him no drinking in the stadiums, he said "Yes, but THREE HOURS BEFOREHAND AND an hour after!"

Just sent him this glorious news.

This is absolutely shambolic by literally everyone involved. I understand the significance of the "once every 4 years" thing but players really should just go home. Take a nice month long holiday and get back to their leagues.
Really ? Let’s pack up because of a toxic liquid isn’t being sold in a country that prohibits it

I don't drink and haven't for a while, so it's not like I think you need to have beer to go alongside football. The whole "we've got to get a skin full on a match day or it just won't be a proper day at the footie" view never really applied to me even when I did drink

What I will say though is that if there was going to be no beer then FIFA should have been upfront about it MONTHS ago as opposed to on the eve of the tournament when people have already travelled

I'm guessing because they knew some wouldn't travel in that case

What an absolute shambles of a tournament

My rant isn't against the beer part per se but that it's just yet another thing in the long long long long long list of things Qatar never should have even been considered for hosting the world cup with. They agreed to XYZ in order to put forth a bid and have basically reneged on just about every single one of them.

Can someone very clever edit a previous budweiser world cup advert so that all the beer and slogans are removed and the glasses and bottles are all empty but the spoken content is the same.

I sense a good chuckle on the books...
