I think that'll be a necessity rather than a virtue. Wages are a finite and a couple of genuine marquee signings will blow most of the £38M received off the Stones sale after Barnsley got their cut.

I tend to think that we have more than the Stones transfer money, but yes it is a necessity after how things have panned out. I agree it's disappointing; I was hoping we'd get at least a couple of marquee signings, especially Mata, but for me it seems a case of that calibre of player not being overly interested just yet. Who knows if this investment had come years back, as it rightly should have?

While wages I do think will be a bit of an issue without having increased our revenue (which we now have) we obviously had the money available based solely on the fact that we offered Witsel a deal which I quote 'blew everybody else out of water.' That came from the Italian side as well as the Russian side...

At the end of the day - in this example - he didn't want to join a club that has been tosh for two seasons and has a large rebuild on their hands overall (a project, if you will). The quality players in their prime 27-30 (which is what we need to improve) want success and quickly - it's not always about money

I'm not even sure Witsel and Mata would be considered top end signings, tbh. They might be able to attract CL football elsewhere but if we cant attract them it's not a great sign anyway...and that's leaving aside the possibility their wage demands were really the deal breaker.

Bottom line: under present rules we cant spend our way to a better position. It'll take a manager to blend a proper team and those who own and run the club to get things right off the pitch - which will take years.

they'd be top end signings for a club that has finished 11th two years running Dave...

edit: agree with the rest though

With no wage constraints the sky high expectations of early summer would have been warranted. The fact that they are in place should have led to a much more circumspect analysis of our short to medium term potential under Moshiri.

But the wage constraints give a plausible and acceptable reason for us selling Stones this summer mate - as it would be for the betterment of the teams future re wages rising

Lads I'm happy to go on record and say I'm not keen on this guy.

£30 million pounds for a 27 year old player who wasn't that amazing otherwise he'd likely be elsewhere, seems like a bad idea.

I'm holding on to the fact that I know very little about football, but hope the plan is for him to create more assists than score actual goals, leaving it to the strikers and that he is a late bloomer as the media say in regards to his value at that age, rather than buying "potential" and spending £30m on some up and coming unheard of player who plays in Europe. Like Fellaini was?

Comfort please.

Hi Dave, welcome back.

What do you make of the new boss and the signings and rumours like this one so far?

Didn't koulibaly agent say we have basically offered more than Chelsea? So we have actual quotes from agents saying how much we have been offereing but yet people like yourself just refuse to believe anything

Too many people thinking short term, it may take a while but feel more confident now then have done for last few years, our club is in need of serious renovation, it will take time but in a few years it will be worth it

Spot on. Something else people seem to ignore (or forget) when making assumptions about how much we would have to spend, is our revenue compared to other big spending clubs:

http://www.skysports.com/football/n...-earning-premier-league-club-in-201415-season

We're 8th on that list, slightly behind Newcastle. We're miles behind Tottenham in 6th and significantly further than that behind the top 5. Clubs around where we are: the Newcastle's, West Ham's, Aston Villa have to be very careful about overspending when they bring in the relatively low revenue compared to the top 6. In the case of 2 of those 3 clubs i've mentioned, it's backfired and they've both been relegated, despite spending big.

Moshiri was never going to come in and fork out £100m of his own money when he plans on steadily improving various things long term, including a new stadium. That's a recipe for disaster. Most clubs in the world have to sell players when they know they want out and when you're being offered the kind of money for Stones that we were, it was inevitable we would allow him to leave.

What Moshiri seems to have done short term is strengthen us off the pitch by bringing in Koeman and Walsh and focusing on the Stadium. He's obviously set aside funds for transfers but maybe not the mythical £100m.

I still expect us to spend big on a few players near the end of the window as well. Possibly on someone like Mata, or maybe on someone we've not even been linked with yet.
