Young EFC Players Out On Loan 17-18

I was pleasantly surprised over breakfast to read a short report in the S Times on the Forest match. Dowell as well as a mention gets an 8 and Man of the Match from the reporter, very satisfying to see that for one of our youngsters. If he gets 30 odd games for Forest this season it will be really great following his exploits, without doubt the most exciting player of all six on loan. Will check in on his own thread when I get time to see if they've decided if he's Messi or John Paul Kissock yet.

I saw the highlights from the Barnsley game, noted they had him as the single defensive midfielder in front of the back four and that was how it looked on tv. Not easy being the person playing that role , and find see him do much. He didn't appear as dynamic as when playing for the U23s , more conservative jogs back and forard - style was more Ryan Ledson than a Davies or Walsh if that makes sense.
He was mostly playing right centre midfield, as you say, very much as defensive cover - which was maybe why the effect of any wayward passes on attack and mistimed tackles on a break was magnified. I think some of the Barnsley fans can see what he is trying to do and appreciate the effort he is putting in, but others are not impressed with any of their midfield.

I think some fans see a player come from a big club and expect them to be the best player in their team, and if they aren't they react badly towards them. The whole point of these loans is that they're young lads still learning the game. If all improve through their spells then job done imo.

Personal view - I watched much of the Barnsley game as I hadn't seen Joe Williams in action this season yet and Barnsley were an attractive footballing side last season.

I thought he put in a poor performance in a very poor side, who were second-best all over the pitch. In defence, on occasion he would dive in and miss a tackle, resulting in a hole behind him while on attack his distribution was surprisingly inaccurate (if I remember rightly, he had a stretch of breaking down three attacks by passing to the opposition). On a positive side, even though he was having a bit of a nightmare he was still looking for the ball and happy to show for the pass.

Thinking about it afterwards, his game probably summed up why loans are necessary. If you are at the level where you are going to be loaned out to the Championship or above, then you have probably been pretty much a rising star in the Academy. That means you can afford to have a wayward game or play some poor passes and staff may criticise but still see the potential of your positive moments.

On loan, this is real life. When you give the ball away on attack, that's your team-mates who have busted a gut to run up the field with you to try to get an equaliser which will stop the thousands of fans getting on their back and the manager decide to shake up the team. And it's real life for you now as well. No longer all about potential, it's about whether you get the chance at Everton or end up at Colwyn Bay thinking about what might have been.

On balance, I think Joe Williams possibly needs to stop the Academy 'style' where you are trying to do the right things and start playing professional percentage football (i.e. get rid rather than doing a Stones near your own box).

I think in the early games Williams has played what you mentioned has been his main criticism which was going into tackles he couldn't win and leaving big holes behind him.

This where they sink or swim though isn't it mate, the football matters as do the results.

I'm a fan of Browning. Watched all of their cup game against Bury and he is just solid. He's not Michael Keane or anything but next year I'd have him over Williams and Jags as cover at CB in a new York minute.
I watched a lot of the Sunderland V Leeds game yesterday.
Galloway was very poor and Browning was solid but a long long way off the type of player we need at the back.
I can't ever see him being able to replace a player like Williams.
I think both Browning and Galloway are playing to establish careers for themselves in the Championship.

..I think they have to really impress if they're to be considered for Everton, Bruce. Most will improve for the experience but that might not be enough to have a future with us.

My benchmark is that they need to develop to such an extent that Everton would be looking to buy them if they were not already Everton a Toffee.

I was thinking more to have a career in the game really. A relatively small number will play for us.

..yes, I agree that most of these lads will have decent careers in the game. Let's not forget, if they are on loan they will already be on a professional contract, perhaps earning £20k or so a month.

He dived. He already tried once with a dive, didn't get given. Second time he got the penalty. Was a good dive though; searched for the leg, felt a slight tap and went down but very easy.

Penalty is missed though.

He is a talented lad. Have see a few comments though suggesting a lack of stamina. Hopefully this if just a case of a young man adjusting to men's football.
