Young EFC Players Out On Loan 17-18

The real skill of our "Director of Football" in the next year or so is going to be making sure that our glut of young central midfielders get game time and we retain some rights over their futures.

At the moment we have:
Davies
Baningime
Williams
Connolly
Walsh
vying for those places and looking like they could do a job.

Then
Dowell
Vlasic
Lookman
as attacking midfielders who are looking towards first team action in the next 0-24 months

Not to mention the next wave like Adeniran and Denny who could develop in that time frame plus Gana/Scheniderlin/Sigurdsson/Lennon/Bolasie/McCarthy/Rooney/Klaassen.

..the last fan quote that @atrottel captured might be the best for consideration: ‘9 for the season for him now. He looks lightweight at times and goes missing but he’s always got that bit of magic in him. Give him a year or two to build up his strength and he’ll be some player’.

Which is cool with me. And exactly why he's out on loan where he is now and not with us in he big league.

I hate to sound like a 'DOES HE TRACK BACK?!' merchant. But does he track back?!

We see 30 second glimpses of magic because boss goals look great. I need to know what he does over 90 minutes to judge but I just can't be arsed to each a Nottingham Forest match.

Swap him for Tyias the Tank; Everton & Allardyce can have Kone if they let Sunderland keep Browning
If Sam Allardyce is supposedly keen on a reunion with Lamine Kone at Goodison Park, on loan Everton defender Tyias Browning would easily keep the Ivorian out of the Sunderland side right now. Hey, let's just do a swap.
Tyias Browning was excellent again at the heart of Chris Coleman's three-man defence yesterday. The Everton loanee was strong in the tackle and made three crucial blocks and some excellent clearances as Sunderland finally ended their home hoodoo with a win against Fulham.
With the 23-year-old already surpassing Lamine Kone's contribution to the red-and-white cause this season, someone inside Black Cats Towers really ought to be making a cheeky call to Sam Allardyce to suggest he can have the Ivorian in January if he lets us hang onto Browning next season.
Big Sam has of course been linked to Kone and the other assorted fleeting gems from his time at Sunderland since he was unveiled at Goodison, as he was when he washed up at Palace. Those who have otherwise been rubbish since the Everton boss departed the Stadium of Light have already been linked with a move to Merseyside. Patrick van Aanholt and Wahbi Khazri have been mentioned and Jan Kirchhoff will be no doubt if he ever manages to get himself fit.
Kone is injured of course and won't return to action until roughly mid-way through the January transfer window. The North East press weren't prepared to allow that to get in the way of the obvious tittle-tattle to be spread this week though. The Northern Echo started the story that Allardyce is desperate to sign the Ivorian defender but will request a detailed fitness report from Sunderland ahead of pondering a bid. Quite why a Darlington-based newspaper would have the inside track on Big Sam's Merseyside transfer thinking is anyone's guess but times are hard in the print news world.
Before his latest injury, Lamine Kone has been rot again this season, as he was last. A January exit will suit all parties and bring the curtain down on a terrible eighteen months in the former Lorient man's career. The Ivorian will be 29 on February 1st - the day he's likely to be unveiled in someone else's colours - and in the decade since he made his professional debut in the lower echelons of French football, the Paris-born defender has really only displayed any Premier League ability in that few months under Allardyce.
But let's not tell the Evertonians that and surely Kone will finally vacate the Stadium of Light in January after outstaying his welcome for well over a year now. There were rumours a couple of top flight clubs were taking a look at him in the summer but Sunderland's valuation put them off. The Black Cats will no doubt have to concede some ground in the upcoming transfer window to shift him on for much above the £5m they paid Lorient two years ago.
Quite what Everton's intentions for Browning will be in the summer is unclear. The former England U20 international appears to possess sufficient to forge a career for himself in the Premier League. If under Simon Grayson he was somewhat inconsistent in the first months of his spell at Sunderland, he wasn't the only one as the dismissed manager's lack of defensive nous was laid bare in brutal fashion.
In his last couple of appearances as part of a centre-back trio, the lad has displayed an encouraging new-found awareness and sense of positioning which was lacking earlier in the season. Certainly Browning's game seems to complement that of the ageing John O'Shea next to him as well as summer signing Marc Wilson.
If the veteran O'Shea's legs are gone, the youngster alongside him makes up for it and whilst Browning isn't the tallest lad on the pitch, the Sunderland captain's heading ability compensates for his 5ft 11in stature. Though it was Marc Wilson, the other man in central defence, who commanded the occasional aerial battle yesterday against Fulham. It seems to work and will be tested further in next week's relegation fixture against Birmingham.
Browning's game still has a way to develop and despite one Gary Bennett-esque run forward yesterday which got the crowd going, he still needs to work on his composure when in possession. In truth the Everton lad resembles the Lamine Kone we can vaguely recall from the Allardyce days in some ways, but right now he would quite easily keep Kone out of the side.

...I actually think he’d have been our best option on the right side this season because he already has a very effective partnership with Kenny. I know Unsworth always thought his best position would be as a no10 but it’s difficult to see him getting game time there.

I doubt Dowell will ever be a ‘busy’ player but I think busy players often flatter to deceive. With Dowell I think you will always get pretty much what you get now, which is real quality when in possession of the football. Players like him fleetingly impact games but have the ability to make a difference. I think he’s a bit better than being a ‘luxury’ but he will frustrate at times.

It’ll be interesting if Everton cash him in or decide to introduce him into the squad.

I wonder whether our fan base would accept him Eggs.

...as always, I think it’s very dependent on whether a player is seen to deliver. The fans aren’t daft, they understand the game and they want to watch quality footballers not just ‘dogs of war’ types. Dowell has already scored 9 goals from midfield so he’s clearly got talent, especially when you think that this is his first proper taste of open age football.

It’s great reading about our youngsters doing well, all be it at Championship level. The recent improvement in fortune of Connolly and Browning are particularly welcome. We’ve always known Connolly was versatile enough to play any of the back four positions and there was a vague nod to “ he can play midfield too” but these comments seem to suggest midfield may be his best position. Interesting.
Browning has definitely benefited from Coleman’s arrival as he rarely seemed to get a look in previously, and at his age , 23,he still needs someone with defensive nous to guide, instruct and help him improve.

They both illustrate the dilemmas with talented youngsters. If they’d stayed both would have played some game time recently, but undoubted playing on loan has been more beneficial, but get players in the wrong loan deal and they don’t have chance to shine. It also illustrates for me why they raised the PL 2 competition to U23s, to give youngsters longer to make that break through. The dilemma is how long you give them and how do you prevent them blocking younger players coming through. Let’s hope both keep this up until the end of the season.

Didn't go to the Bristol city, forest game yesterday but my dad did, I asked him what the game was like etc,

He wasn't impressed with forest at all but stated 'their best player by a country mile was a lad called dowell.'

Intelligent and good on the ball. He also scored a very good goal aswell!!

I wrote that. The lad is doing great.

Kone is dog [Poor language removed] and nearly 29. Signing players just because Allardyce got a tune out of them for a few weeks a couple of years ago in the midst of an adrenaline charged fight to survive is surely madness

Good read!
Kone was flavour of the month on the transfer thread here a couple of summers ago, but I don't think you'll find many these days that would admit they ever wanted him.
What do you think of Galloway?
