And Yet... Perspective

Well it does look like this was a season in transition. We had so many games with kids on the bench and no options. Obviously Carlo clearing it out before new players come in the summer.

I'm just disappointed it turned out the way it had. At one point we looked like wecould challenge Top 4, and we kept losing to terrible teams by 1 goal... it was always by a goal. The only game I think we lost by more than that was Newcastle. This tells me the side can't create anything.

We honestly need another 10 GOOD players in the squad, so it's going to take at least two summers to get that.

Also as someone who lives in the Asia time zone...the last few months have been super frustrating. most of the games are on in the early hours of the morning (12-6am) because they're the late games in the UK, which means I dont stay up for them and only watch the replay if we win... I've watched like 2 or 3 games in 3 months? I've had to watch champions league games because there's so little Everton worth watching right now
It’s not transition...it’s flux

We have some decent players scattered about the squad, but overall a dreadful squad.

You can't go into a game with Iwobi, Sigurdsson, Gomes starting and expect to beat top 10 opposition. It's on Ancelotti only to the extent he's starting those players, but if he doesn't we're quickly down to youth players.

He hadn't got the tools to work with. Judge him this time next year after what is hopefully a big summer.

But even then, this remains a constant fact for me - Ancelotti goes when Ancelotti wants to go. There's no scenario that exists where Everton sack him. We can't do better.

Sure, what about Newcastle, Fulham, Burnley and the rest...

We have over achieved all season . The lack of credible options off the bench has finally come to roost. You can't rely on 1 striker all season. You can't rely on 1 injury prone albeit a genius creative player. Your can't rely on a 30 something has been right back who was finished 3 yrs ago. This is undoubtedly a missed opportunity this season
I'm curious about this statement in the context of what you wrote before it. Do you mean our recruitment let us down? Or we should be rotating players more?

So, you're a chef. You've got really sharp knives; new, heavy bottomed pans; a marvellous food processor.

Unfortunately, your ingredients have come from the "Dodgy but might get away with it" aisle at Lidls.

Your results are going to be patchy at best.

Every game goes by, we have many of the following talking points.

"Pickford is a liability. Poor positioning, poor feet, too small, passing atrocious, arrogant and lacks concentration. Sell, if we can."

"Coleman is finished. Been a good servant, but he's not up to it any more. Needs replacing as a number 1 priority. Get [Insert name] in from [Insert League]."

"Keane/Mina/Holgate (delete as appropriate) is a liability, an accident waiting to happen. Need a proper Centre half who can play a high line. Sell."

"Gomes is a fraud. He needs binning. Does nothing and is an absolute bottle job. Sell."

"Sigurdsson is awful. Absolute ghost. He's had his 1 good game every 3 months has he? Bin."

"Davies is sh*te. Absolute myth. Worst player to ever wear the shirt. What is the point in him. More bothered about fashion than football. Bin"

"Delph... LOL"

"Gbam-injured"

"Iwobi is useless. Biggest waste of money we've ever spent. What does he do? What is his position? Sell."

"Berna... Nope."

"Richarlison does my head in. Not good enough. Sulks too much. First touch is terrible, shooting is worse. Attitude stinks. I'd sell for whatever we can get."

"DCL is not good enough. Only scores tap ins. 20 goals isn't that good when you think about it. He could've scored 60. We can do better. Sell."

"King. Who?"

And yet...

Ancelotti is still a failure for somehow dragging anything out of this absolute horror show of a squad. Especially that midfield.

We basically have Godfrey, Digne, Allan, Doucoure and James who are (somewhat) free from Criticism. All 5 are Ancelotti/Brands picks and 4 of them joined a week before the season started. Only Godfrey has been available for more than 75% of our games, and the rest have been missing at various overlapping points through this weird, bullsh*t season.

Has it been perfect ? Absolutely not. But we've had some good moments.

There is still an outside possibility of Europe, with a squad that I would genuinely struggle to compare favourably with any other team in the top 10.

Its a long term project, and it's gonna take time, but honestly, have a bit of pause when you hammer the manager for not being good enough, and have a bit of patience. Because as frustrating as it is when we blow opportunities the way we keep doing, it must be even more frustrating for the manager who is made to look a mug by them week in week out. And for the time being, there's not an awful lot he can do about it.

P. S. I am aware that a lot of those opinions, especially Pickford and the Ghost, are mine. I stand by them.
If as you say he struggles to get a tune out of dross playing yesterdays system.
Why doesnt he go back to the system he stumbled on and got results with...The 4 Amigos across the back?
That worked.
We got wins and draws against decent teams, using, in theory, even less of what little bit quality we have.

I disagree. James, Allan, Doucoure and Godfrey have all improved the squad. I'll be very surprised if we don't add at least 2 or 3 more players in the summer who will also improve the squad. And the summer after that 2 or 3 more players. Which gets you a full team of new outfield players. At that point in time I believe we can get in or around the top 6. That is the very definition of transition. That's how long it took Klopp over the park, and he started from a much higher base than Ancelotti.

Nobody says we have to win every home game...not many do.
But likewise, to lose 6 or 7 or 8??

We don't, If we'd have got mere draws Vs all of them, we'd be above West Ham too

It's not good enough, nobody is saying it is, but it's the blame on Ancelotti that I question instead of the blame being on the cowards he has to field.

He's having to polish a turd. The fact we're still talking about European football after Alex Iwobi gets 28 games is incredible.

No, the problem people have with Ancelotti isn't necessarily the results; it's the style of play. We're awful to watch, truly dreadful. But for me that's a lot to do with the dross we have on the pitch and less to do with the manager.
