Back to a David Moyes team

@Zatara

Keane for Stones? I'm happy yes
Klaassen/Sigurdsson for Barkley? I'm happy yes
Deulofeu in reality has always been a bit part player for us
Rooney/Sandro for Lukaku? Never seen anything from Sandro, so can't comment. I'm sure you watch and awful lot more of European football than me. Rooney, well he looks fit, focussed, motivated and determined, something that seemed a little bit lost with Lukaku.

So all in all, I guess we can say I'm happy yes

Moyes made a pretty good team out of not much money. That team got old and needed replacing, but Martinez didn't really have much money either so relied on young players and Wigan, which worked for a while then went tits up. Then Koeman came in and patched up the failing Martinez team, and now he's been given the money to make a new team, similar to what Moyes did in 2007.

In that sense I think Zat is about right to be honest. We're still lacking that real quality in the forward positions that all the top teams have.

Nothing really wrong with going 'back to the future', get in the players with the right characters and then once it appears we are a valid alternative to the top teams for decent players, pick the ones that will suit our system.

That's not really possible to tell until they have spent some time with us.

True...its all opinions but you wouldn't look at say, Sigurdsson coming in for 50mil and say hes a top star...or would you?

Well don't ignore the question then?

If they're the supporting stars to Stones, Barkley, Lukuku & Deulofeu then who would YOU like us to bring in to replace these "jewels".

For Stones we have Pickford and Keane already, Williams/Jags is the weak link. I think we need a centre back signing whose another level up from these two...someone in the VVD, Koulibaly, Gimenez, Sanchez bracket.

Lukaku goes and we should be looking at someone who can be potentially a world star, an icon for the team. Its got to be a Dolberg or someone else whose got everything in his locker to be truly world class

This level of player...some stardust on top of the 7/10 performance players

Again, you don't know until they have played some proper games for us. I personally think Keane is a better player than Stones, certainly in 2017.

I would have assumed Sandro would be right up your street.

I agree, Keane I'm happy with and think he will be a good solid defender for us. Also Sandro I'm keen to see as well.

Good solid players...but where is our potential superstar? Like when the RS signed Coutinho, Torres, Suarez...

Wheres ours? Sigurdsson lol

All have huge potential, but wasn't capable of preventing two successive bottom half premier league finishes.

Not so fussed on the former players, its what they have been replaced with.

Weve gone from dreaming about potential superstars to now having a 'solid' team...who are we 'excited' about?

Most are unknown quantities.

Sandro, Klaassen and possibly Pickford and Keane are unknown or relatively new to this league.

Rather than think we are doomed, what if this spine clicks into place and we win stuff. At least the team is all pulling in the same direction and is determined to succeed. We have always had a player with one eye on the exit since I can remember.

Could go either way but it will be intriguing to see.

I don't think we are doomed ;)

Personally think most of the spine with Pickford-Keane-Gana-Schneiderlin is really strong....but still lacks 2 star quality players.

Jewels in the crown?
Stones wilts under pressure
Deulofeu has paper lungs
Lukaku has a titty lip (top slotter though)
Barkleys balls haven't dropped
Football matches are won by team work, skill and bottle, not posturing.

Team work, bottle but like you say skill....we need the X-factor from somewhere...

Cant fault the attitude of these new players...not at all. They would be the stable players who can be consistent each week. But which one will become a global name like Lukaku or a fan favourite or a potential world class defender....

None of them imo...theyre all stable signings...
We'll see Zat. However I will say, Lukaku is not a global name, your view is too myopic. A fan favorite, I could definitely see Sandro becoming that in the years to come especially if he lives up to his number. A "potential world class defender" that has so much "potential" that he was benched for quite a bit of City's season. Keane is going to surpass Stones soon if he hasn't already.

Also I find it strange that somehow implicitly your arguments downplay the need for consistency. It's almost as if you want us to be in a perpetual state of rebuilding by buying the new "jewels" every time we spend on a player.

Edit: Global Name is a term you can play fast and loose with. I'd say once my casual acquaintances who ask about the sport when I talk about it mention the name Lukaku then he'd become a Global Name.

And sadly the world seems to have given up on you. Go and play with your dog or something.

I don't quite think it has as I'm here. If you think we are back to a David Moyes team or will be your totally deluded but it's your opinion mate.

And btw that dog your referring to they're died. Some people need to think before they speak.

Granted, we have more established players now but that's what we needed. We're starting our Europa campaign tomorrow with two captains from last years final...

Lookman, Sandro, Dowell, Davies, Pickford, Calvert-Lewin... tons of upcoming talent.

I literally could have written your response myself; absolutely knew what you were going to say. You're whinging we've lost our jewels yet think we should be replacing them with unproven kids instead of tried & tested players like Rooney and Sigurdsson. Okay mate.

Seen both mate , Lineker was on a different planet to Rom in front of goal, he would have run amok with the present rules, saying that he played in better teams, but as a pure goalscorer he on a totally different class

Thing is Pete with the exception of Bally the other world class players were not rated as such when we bought them, we might be able to do it again hopefully;)

I really like Schneiderlin, who would have got into our 80's team, I'm hoping for good things from Pickford (fingers crossed) and I think Keane would have been fine in either the 60's or 80's team as he has a certain presence about him. The rest are good players but don't put me on the edge of my seat. Klaassen may do it, Dowell also, but either way it's going to be a very interesting season........

Don't worry. He's all for signing Koulibaly yet admitting to never seeing him play, only on YouTube.

Mad.

Not to mention spunking 6m on the lad at Newcastle shortly, but hey ho, Moyes did that all the time, bought 17 year olds for 6m.

Losing Barkley ( assuming someone pays up ) and Lukaku is going to be tough to deal with. They're two very good players, but we might just end up with a more rounded squad and a better team as a result. Koeman's dealing with that, and will be judged over the next couple of seasons accordingly.

Obviously the above words are just glib nothings. The only real reason I'm typing anything in this thread is because it gives me great joy to see @Zatara quoting things properly, and not just a single quote, but multi-quotes with answers in the right order. Tis a joy to read, well, not actually read, skim over would be more exact, but tis a joy nevertheless.

I really cannot believe the negative mindset of the opening post.
We are now steadily transforming ourselves from a bit of a joke (albeit still a proud club), into a properly run machine that should be competitive.
These are exciting times in my view and certain people should consider giving their heads a wobble.
If Ron gets in Sig, a quality striker and a left sided defender, then happy days are ahead.
We have all been through the dark days, and the club letting us down in the transfer windows, but for gods sake smell the roses.

Weve been top 7 or thereabouts bar 2 Martinez seasons and a couple from Moyes...not sure that's a 'joke'.

Which players are you excited about us signing? Who do you think will be getting other fans as excited to go to the match as Lukaku was for example?

We had at least one world class player when we won titles, Nev, Ball, Young/Vernon. We don't have any now, but I feel far more confident with our current team and manager (who initially I wasn't in favour of) than I have for years. Our 80's champions knew how to put in a bit of effort, Barkley would not have got into that side, and for me that's the only way to judge a player...... who would have got into our 80's or 60's team......

Kanchelskis would have done...who do we have in our side now who could be at that level? Maybe one of the youngsters but we look more like a solid team with no stars....

How can you not be excited with the current group of players we have?

Baffling.

All the "Jewels" wanted to leave, we didnt win nothing with them, lets see if the "Moyes Dads army" can do better.

Which player are you most excited about who can become our star player and club icon who other teams fans think of when they think of us?

To be fair those were the players who we all pinned our hopes on, the ones to build our team around and for one magical season it seemed to work out quite well.

But like you say for a multitude of reasons they didn't deliver on the promise or had already started thinking of things away from Everton. From the results we have put out in preseason it looks like we won't miss any of them too much.

Hopefully by the time Barkley has been sold we will have had the best part of £170M from them which has rebuilt our team into something that looks a bit more solid, so for that I thank them.

Definitely look more solid....but for the money..wheres the star quality?

Lukaku was always going to leave. Stones' head was turned by a club with ridiculous wealth that challenges for titles and offered ridiculous money for him! He has hardly shone since either. Barkley is the only real shame. Seems he has fallen out with Koeman but I think it shows his mindset. Doesn't look like he is willing to fight for a place but rather, expects to play. Delofoeu was a luxury and not anywhere near the player some seem to think (Manny Fernandes MkII).

If you think Moyes would have kept them all with offers like that you are mad! We will move on and I feel we will be better in the long term.

They've all taken a step up. As for Moyes, the current team looks like a typical Moyes team...don't you think?

loving the self defeating behaviours in this thread.

'they weren't our jewels' , 'they were rubbish' ,'we didn't want them anyway', 'we have much better now' .

these 'bad players' went to man city , man utd , Barcelona and potentially spurs , who last time I looked were all in the champions league this year and will actually be competing for silverware.

I'm sure we would be better with those players in our squad.
if the issue was reversed and we were signing stones lukaku barkley and deulofeu I'm pretty sure we would be saying we were building a team for the long term and dancing on the ceiling.

don't get me wrong , we are doing ok with the business coming in, but the money aside, we are doing terrible at holding on to players good enough to play for the so called 'elite' clubs.

I do ask myself 'well how can we compete with the higher teams if our 'best' players see us as nothing more than a stepping stone and we end up selling them to the very same clubs we are trying to catch ?'
also 'whos next ? if davies lookman keane klassen gana sandro are successful in any way , will they too be cherry picked by teams we aim to overtake ?'

so I hate to say it but I think we are still treading water in all honesty.
I do hope for a further statement of intent from the club , and one thats bigger and better than just overspending 50 million on Sigurdsson tbh.

Possibly the most sensible post all night....
