Baines until very recently was our penalty taker, our main man for free kicks within 30 yards of the goal, and our main attacking defender. Now, certainly on the evidence of last night, but also to a great extent before then, he's not expected to get forward on the overlap anymore, he didn't take any direct free kicks near goal, and he's not now even our penalty taker it would appear.

I really should want to reply to this in staunch defence of Baines, but I've done so many times. This argument just seems to be on repeat.

Was... he's peaked, ( as has Pienaar and his drop off is even more noticable ) not a lot, but enough. You can't blame it all on Martinez and or changing team formations and dynamics...It happens.

So what could he have done more for you this season? He's got 7 assists, chipped in with a few goals.

I think we need to remember that whilst his time with pienaar was easy on the eye, Baines has continued year on year producing the goods.

under Moyes we had an unhealthy setup of basing our game around Baines, now the load is shared and we are a far more balanced outfit. Imo this has nothing to do with Baines himself, who again, is proving this year that he is the best left back in the league.
