Brendan Galloway

I agree we need to bring someone in.

It's harsh on Galloway though. The drawback for me was that he was not going to get forward too much; but that was his virtue too in many respects. Obviously Koeman wants adventurous FBs so even if he does come back in he'll be in and out of the team...at LB anyway.

I think our current left back predicament is an allegory of the wider difficulties we face. In Baines you have a lad who's past his best, becoming injury prone and probably institutionalised into one way of playing (under Moyes with the partnership with Peinaar). You've got Oviedo, who like many of that ilk has promised a lot and not delivered. Then you have a younger player in Garbutt who showed promise but wasn't given enough game time under Moyes to develop. While Galloway was thrown in at the deep end in a gung ho fashion without learning to defend properly. All the mistakes of the last 5 years, lack of forward planning and subsequent over exuberance are summed up perfectly in our left back situation. 4 Left backs and none of them convincing.

I think we need to simplify. It might sound old fashioned but cut the rubbish, go back to basics which is if you need a left back go and get the best left back you can get. One who can get up and down, can defend and can contribute going forward. For me that is Bertrand or Creswell. I am not normally hard on young players but I don't see it with Galloway I'm afraid. He looks lightweight to me.

I agree with the basis of that. West Ham away was another game where he looked way out of his depth, he was absolutely taken apart by Victor Moses. He also had a game like that for WBA earlier this season, which is why he was benched originally.

He reminds me of Rodwell, in that he's clearly got a lot of good attributes, but it isn't immediately clear what he stands out at, or what his best position will be. I'm certainly not writing the lad off as he's clearly talented, but I agree that a lot of people have gone way overboard with regard to his current level.

It is a classic case of a player has become better when they are out of the team. His positioning has never looked right to me, he is too lightweight and not clever enough to nip in front of players like Stones did.

The Rodwell comparison is interesting. The thing was with Rodwell when he broke through he had all of the components he needed to play his best position. He could control and pass the ball, tackle, run, shoot. Against Liverpool in the cup he came on and ran the game for half an hour at 16 or 17. I have never seen Galloway put in a performance where he was perfect in his position. Nor do I think a lot of the attributes he has are perfectly suited to a full back. He looks like a centre half who's not big or strong enough yet playing full back to me.

He certainly isn't a full back, he's all at sea when he plays against a proper winger.

I think Rodwell flattered to deceive. Yes he looked like he had everything you need to be a central midfielder, but he very very rarely put the whole lot together. His goal against United and one in a European game stand out, but I think he only got about 6 for us in around 100 games, and a couple of those were headers from corners. Similarly, he looked like he could tackle, but he struggled to impose himself on games as a rule and could sometimes be anonymous. That's why I don't think he's really suited to that midfield role, he can do each aspect of the job at times but has never been able to really work out what type of player he is. He's played deep, behind a striker and even out wide, but he's never really excelled anywhere.

A mate of mine tagged me in a facebook post last week which was a meme about Rodwell's atrocious record at Sunderland. He'd attached a comment I made to him in 2010 saying exactly what I just said on here, that he's a decent player but was massively overhyped and looked to me like someone who should be playing centre half but didn't have the physicality for it. That's why Galloway reminds me of him.

Do you think Bertrand would join us ? I think he would be ideal.

I kept on saying that both Browning and Galloway reminded me a lot of Tony Hibbert last year in that they both defended well but were, the majority of times, the cause of us breaking down last year going forward. They are both defenders, first and foremost. Think Browning is going to make a good CB tho. Galloway? Not sure where he fits..

No, I think you're absolutely right concerning left back. Just cut through the Gordian Knot and have done with it. Baines is history, the rest are just applying a sticking plaster.

This is where the owner needs to step up and provide cash in the next two windows: not just for the patently obvious lack of secondary striker and playmaker and GK, but positions that we just all tend to rub along with and kid ourselves that what we have is ok for the time being. That LB berth is one that needs a bold approach to it.

I think we need to go back to what we did under Royle, which is buy good players who can hold down a place in the first team. Forget all the nonsense about squad players, developing players etc. If a player is good enough play him, if not sign someone who is. Don't try to re-invent the wheel.

We have won one game out of seven since Baines got injured...

He's key to us.

Unless you're referring to him as being 'history' due to his current injury record? Or are you basing it off your irrational hatred of him?

I think you'll find David's hatred of Baines is far from irrational, there's a very solid basis for it...

BTW, people slating the lad also need to have a hard look at themselves.

He's 20 years old fgs, and has played something like 20 games for Everton, and done perfectly well most of the time.

Looking forward to him coming back if it's the case and adding a bit more quality/depth in that position.

I think that he'll need to bulk up before Koeman gives him a run. The biggest hole I've seen in his game is a vulnerability to being out-muscled and rolled by physical forwards.

Add strength to his pace and aggression and you should have a decent defender on your hands.
