Brendan Galloway

He's a centre back and going to be boss there eventually, expecting him to bomb on like Baines is unrealistic

lest not forget, Baines has not done this with any great effect for some time and invariably needs Pienaar to be ahead of him.

I just don't agree that Galloway stifles our attacks down the left. Play Gerry in front of him and see what happens. The tippy tappy nonsense is what stifles our forward play, we take far too much time and unnecessary touches in moving the ball forward.

I would agree that he doesn't exactly stifle, like a Hibbert type player, but to match our ambition we do need a more attacking outlet on that side. That's no slight against the lad though. He's a young centre back playing out of position and doing it superbly. We've got a real player on our hands by the looks of things. John Stones Mk II

We have enough attacking players in our team as it is to want Brendan to start playing like Baines. As much as I was sad to see Bryan get another injury yesterday I felt a whole lot safer about the result with Brendan playing on the left as he's so much better defensively. He still gets up to support though and is doing his best in an unfamiliar position. We yesterdays line-up only him and maybe Barry could be classed as a defensive player. Both our centre backs play like they're Yaya Toure.

We were noticeably less exposed on our right side than left due to Coleman bombing forward

I think Galloway is fantastic and my only concern if stones stays is how to integrate him, browning FM jags baines Coleman and Garnett into one team

This is the big one for me. Galloway/Browning, outside of the safe, backwards play also do a lot of this, which grinds a lot of our attacks to a halt. Not a criticism as they are young and out of position, just an observation. McCarthy is also a serial offender.

Would be Stones and FM first choice with Galloway Browning in reserve. We're going to be well stocked with good CBs for years to come especially with Holgate and Foulds as well.

Thinking about it, I believe the fact that I wasn't worried at all when he replaced Oviedo and was actually thinking he'd be more defensively sound shows how far he's come already

Mori has been very impressive, however id like to see Galloway emerge over the next couple of seasons and take the LCB position alongside Stones.

To do that he is going to have to be absolute quality...which would likely mean an England call up.

Would be quite something to have Stones and Galloway as Englands first choice centre backs.

I disagree that we need attacking full backs
While it worked in Martinez's 1st season
It didn't last season as teams especially at goodison set up to stop this and IMO both Coleman and Baines cost us goals with some very poor defensive displays

Look at the champions last year
Azpilicueta while technically good is a right back abd hardly the greatest going forward and ivanovic is all about power and gambling in the box
He's not the most easy on the eye type full back
But both are a class above defensively against our two

I think having one full back who s better defender is not a bad thing
And could allow him to drop Ross back and bring in another attacker

Or play 2 better defensive full backs and allow stones to play like a sweeper abd bring the ball forward more

I know Martinez is very unlikely to do this but I would like to see him now and again change the system to keep the opposition guessing

As every team knows how we will set up and play

Galloway does get forward well, but his attacking positioning is poor compared to Baines and Oviedo (naturally). When Oviedo was on he gave us real width in the attack. A lot of times Galloway gets forward, but he's pretty much in the box. Not a problem if we have a winger out wide, but we had Kone in that position and no option to spread it wide.

As it was, Sunderland are turd and we played through them, but against better teams you can't do that and we have to learn to go wide. I've got no complaints about Galloway at all, but Baines does give us that nous going forward that Oviedo showed as well. When we have inside forwards, as it were - which Kone and Mirallas both are when they play on the left - we really need our full-back to stay wide for as long as possible if the aim is to get a cross in.
