Brendan Galloway

Galloway does get forward well, but his attacking positioning is poor compared to Baines and Oviedo (naturally). When Oviedo was on he gave us real width in the attack. A lot of times Galloway gets forward, but he's pretty much in the box. Not a problem if we have a winger out wide, but we had Kone in that position and no option to spread it wide.

As it was, Sunderland are turd and we played through them, but against better teams you can't do that and we have to learn to go wide. I've got no complaints about Galloway at all, but Baines does give us that nous going forward that Oviedo showed as well. When we have inside forwards, as it were - which Kone and Mirallas both are when they play on the left - we really need our full-back to stay wide for as long as possible if the aim is to get a cross in.

Think you have explained Martinez's reasoning to play Oviedo on Sunday perfectly there pal!

None of this is a criticism towards Galloway as he is going to be a centre back!

Although, lets say we keep our young players for next 3-4 seasons, with barry and jags retiring!
Would anyone consider Galloway in that barry position? with Funes Mori and Stones at centre back

I don't think he has the positioning/vision to play that role. Besic is the one.

I disagree that we need attacking full backs
While it worked in Martinez's 1st season
It didn't last season as teams especially at goodison set up to stop this and IMO both Coleman and Baines cost us goals with some very poor defensive displays

Look at the champions last year
Azpilicueta while technically good is a right back abd hardly the greatest going forward and ivanovic is all about power and gambling in the box
He's not the most easy on the eye type full back
But both are a class above defensively against our two

I think having one full back who s better defender is not a bad thing
And could allow him to drop Ross back and bring in another attacker

Or play 2 better defensive full backs and allow stones to play like a sweeper abd bring the ball forward more

I know Martinez is very unlikely to do this but I would like to see him now and again change the system to keep the opposition guessing

As every team knows how we will set up and play

Good point. Would be something worth trying definitely.

He has looked quite the player. My 'arl man pointed him out as one of the stars of this season, and I agree completely.

Baines is now replaceable, and that's nothing against Baines' ability as a footballer.

oh come an.. Baines is a much better player than galloway.. So hyped, and I think its cause he is young. He may one day get up to Baines ability, but right no.. not in a long shot.

....I think the hype about Galloway is absolutely justified, a young lad coming in and making the immediate contribution he has is really impressive. Baines is top drawer and offers something different. I don't think anybody is saying Galloway should replace him but we have certainly got adequate cover.

He could do with being taken out for a bit now you think if we have someone fit? last few appearances havent been his best ! still think he'll be a great centre half for us ! but unfortunate oviedo got injured but him and baines back should be back soon !

Almost completely convinced now that this lad is a defensive mid. Possibly an international class one.
He may not be that comfortable going forward but he is always looking to be positive and take responsibility.

Supposedly this thought has occurred to the Everton staff. He played there as a youth too. Dier has made that exact shift this season as it goes. Hard to say really, haven't really seen what his distribution is like from the centre of the park which is a huge part of it.

He seems to use it intelligently and positively. Maybe won't be splitting defences apart but can see him being great to play with if you were an attacking mid

Didnt dewsnip use him there for England youth?

Im just keep on seeing him and Stones line up in Central defence for england...would be awesome.

However with Holgate and Mori newly signed perhaps DM could be interesting.

Can definitely imagine he's been looked at in that position. I was having naughty dreams about him and Stones at centre half a few weeks back but not so sure now. Would be a very composed and still solid pair so I think it's more about getting even more out of him than any obvious weakness. There is definitely an instinct there to make things happen which isn't always a bad thing for a centre half but why not use it if we have other options at the back. And if we are going to get back to having two attacking full backs, then he provides both a lot of cover and simple ammunition.
Won't do any harm to have extra heading ability in midfield as well.

What is it with Evertonians obsession with the defensive midfield role?

Besic should be in over Barry...McCarthy is learning off Barry...Cleverely can play the holding role...Playing two holding midfielders kills us...Baines could be the next Lahm...Stones would be perfect there...Barry's finished...

Now it seems it's Galloway's turn for the much coveted position. What's next Mirallas could do a job? Lukaku has all the skills for it?

I'm a bit of a traditionalist myself and like to see players play in their best and most natural positions, I've always found it helps with team cohesion, which in turn improves both the team and the player and makes us better. Guess it's just me not being part of the FIFA or FM generation..
