Champions League revamp

Laughing at Sky here.

They basically paid the top teams to leave the Football league and create the Premiership and have pouring money into it ever since.
The Clubs wouldn't be doing it if there TV money wasn't already there, for them to risk going public like this. Sky are just moving in on UEFA's cut of the money by cutting them out all together, they will just deal with the clubs directly in future.

UEFA were extracting the urine, they want to expand the "Champions League" even further because it is their big Cash Cow. The big clubs are fed up with having to fly to the middle of nowhere midweek every few weeks when they are now playing 2-3 days before and after it domestically. The New Euro League would allow clubs and the fans to plan better. No more draws for a fortnight's time where suddenly the team and the supporters have to work out how the hell they are going to get to Azerbaijan and back.

Comparing this to the PL is a horrendous take in my opinion.

Have the same 20/22 teams played every season since 92/93? Do we not have promotion and relegation every May? Do points in the league not count towards European places?

This is a proposal for a closed shop league, the premier league is not. Yes there are issues with the PL of course and plenty of issues they can be criticised on. But to suggest this is a similar scenario is bizarre, incoherent and has no basis.

Don’t punish them this time. But the PL should put out a statement that effective tomorrow, any further attempt to break away for a European super league, will be considered treason and immediately suffer a 20M pound fine and a 15 point deduction.
Can’t believe this got so many likes. They wouldn’t give a **** about either of those sanctions.

And “don’t punish them this time”?! The thing is done, if they’re not somehow turned around.

Removing them from the league is bad for everyone (though keeping them in while letting them form this ESL is even worse).

Expulsion needs to be on the table, but its biggest positive is as leverage to stop this thing in its tracks.
There are a lot of things that can be done to kill this off. Work with the broadcasters and sponsors to walk away from funding the super League. It would not.past 6 months. This could be done by FIFA, uefa and the top European leagues signing exclusivity deals. No matter how big the 12 greedy clubs are, they don't have the financial power of the other organisations combined. Especially when you consider that man city are the only club in that 12 that have cash. The rest are on the edge of oblivion.

The players hold the power here. They are the attraction. Hopefully the threat of not being able to play for their countries might be decisive, but I doubt it if the wages on offer end up being 10 times higher if they forego international football.

Isn't this just what the Premier league did in the 90's? Breaking away from the football league? The only real difference is they kept promotion and relegation. These teams are having 5 places for qualification in the new competition.
They get loads of money just because participating in it there is no will to win it or not. Plus there is no relegation etc. Arsenal, Spurs seriously...

I actually think they should be given the chance to withdraw.

Withdraw now: points deduction and 1 or 2 season European ban

Don’t withdraw: removal from the football pyramid, ban from all other domestic and European competitions, players no longer able to represent their nations.

Something like this is the only way to TRY to put them (and keep them) in line

They have to be punished regardless but doubt they will.

While I think this "European Super League" idea is a complete disgrace, I think there needs to be a revamp of the Premier League, it's a system that has run its course. There needs to be less teams like Norwich, Fulham, WBA, Burnley, Brighton etc and more emphasis on quality. I would favor the Premier League being cut from 20 teams to 14 teams, with more quality on show. Right now, Premier League is full of irrelevant games like Brighton vs WBA and this is not conducive for the league, in terms of a commercial standpoint.
Like 6th place Liverpool, 7th place Chelsea and 9th place arsenal?

You just know it will still all work out fine for them. They’ll always be able to have their cake and eat it. I’d be done with football if that’s as the case. A PL where 6 clubs have untold wealth and the rest have nothing and even if they do put a miracle team together they can’t qualify for Europe anyway.

The PL needs to remove them, but undoubtedly this has all been wargamed out by these clubs and they will have every legal loophole closed off so they’ll end up playing in the prem, getting all their money from that, the players will still play internationals, and they’ll have their super league. Most of these clubs have never been punished since they were created, I doubt they’re suddenly about to start being cast out.
