Champions League revamp

I didn’t follow this closely yesterday, was out on a big walk in the mountains, but on the radio just now......has Gary Neville called for the six of them to be relegated? lol
He called for Arsenal, RS and Man United to be relegated because they represent the history of the game. Man City and Chelsea he didn't excuse and Tottenham, he didn't care about Tottenham.

There are a lot of things that can be done to kill this off. Work with the broadcasters and sponsors to walk away from funding the super League. It would not.past 6 months. This could be done by FIFA, uefa and the top European leagues signing exclusivity deals. No matter how big the 12 greedy clubs are, they don't have the financial power of the other organisations combined. Especially when you consider that man city are the only club in that 12 that have cash. The rest are on the edge of oblivion.
They'll have a TV deal already sorted. It's with DAZN by all accounts.

There are many differences but let’s not forget that the principle of establishing a separate league with the intention of greater wealth for it’s members was started by the establishment of the Premier League. Everything else has followed that “ more for the few” model.

Yes of course but the key difference here is what makes football a sport - competition and the ability for anyone to reach the pinnacle. If there is no opportunity for clubs to qualify for tournaments on merit, then is it truly a sporting competition?

I'm not against money in football. It's not the money element of this which is the biggest problem. It's the fact that qualification is based on wealth not results on a football pitch and the fact that there will be no comeback for failure on the pitch in this competition.

I was only born a year after the PL was formed so don't have a grasp of what things were like prior to its formation. But the PL has never been a closed shop and points on the board have always given the chance for prizes at the end of a season. That is what makes a sport a sport.

The likes of Arsenal sitting in 9th as a mediocre midtable club, yet running off to create a new tournament where they don't need to qualify, is one of the craziest things I've seen in sport.

I mentioned last night that I support Everton through thick and thin. If we were ever to end up in The Conference North I would still attend the games and still support the team.
I f we ever joined something like this proposed Super League I would cut Everton from my life without a second thought.
Football is about the fans. I would much sooner go and watch us v Prescot Celtic than switch my TV on to see us play a glorified friendly v Barcelona.
Prescott Cables are sad at this news lol

Yes, allowing the likes of Swindon town, Barnsley, Reading, Bradford City, Blackpool, Bournemouth a day in the sun - not a chance of any minnows rubbing shoulders with this ESL lot.
That came after negotiation with the league though.

The Clubs are obviously annoyed at UEFA's vision of the Champions League. The Euro League is a fantasy alternative and an extreme starting point for negotiations. Both sides with compromise heavily before an agreement is made.

Kick the 6 scabby rats out

Let them go play their games in Florida. Pay-Per-View on the Disney channel

Liverpool who have never ever spent a penny yet have moaned about other teams having wealth. Haaaaar hypercritical fecks

Big 6 Super League? Nah! Scab 6 Super Greed more like it

Throw them to the lions

Because even if we remove one club from this discussion, there’s hundreds of thousands of people (probably in the millions) who are against this and will have their lives unfairly impacted by the decisions of a few elitist, greedy scumbags.

Every single supporters association has come out and condemned this. It’s also massively naive for anyone here to think that Moshiri wouldn’t consider something like this had we been approached. In which case we as fans would have a massive fight on our own hands. Yes, we rejected Project Big Picture but this is a different beast entirely.

Now don’t get me wrong, I would immediately relegate the lowest of the three clubs involved in this proposal. Wouldn’t even be fully against demoting them all to the national league. As proper fans will still go to their matches and will probably have a good laugh. I would dismiss all prize money for this season for the 6 and I would suspend their status as active football clubs for the summer. A transfer ban and ban from European competition. As clearly to go all biblical, treason shouldn’t go unpunished.

That is why letting them go to the competition whilst kicking them out of the other ones (domestic and European) is the likely option now. The punishments you describe are meaningless really; they’ll make more in this initial share of money than the prize off the PL.

By disbanding the cult and readmitting it’s members into the human race we would be doing them a favour

I could see UEFA being squeezed out here. FIFA could approve it letting their players play in the World Cup knowing that it could kill the euros and make their competition the only show in town. The expanded World Cup We get wants every 2 years could then be a reality. If the national leagues also fall in behind it then it turns into uefa being the odd one out. That’s why it’s essential the leagues don’t fold, but they will.
If they fold to these clubs it's over for them, these 12 clubs are just using their leagues as an easy way to transition across to this new format without taking too much risk initially. If this happens they will eventually leave entirely anyway (within a few years too).

Rambling warning:

Taking a step back on the ESL and wondering how it could play out and the implications..

The most affected is the ECL. Effectively the ESL teams are withdrawing from that competition but feel they can maintain the local league. In reality this is possible. However UEFA et al won't like their cash cow sidelined and have the power of the local league at least to use as a stick to keep the ESL from happening or as punishment. If it goes ahead the CL becomes a watered down event much like the Europa as the best players and manager are not included. Will FIFA do this, I don't know. FIFA might want to protect the leagues they do have and let go control of CL as survival mechanism. They may fear that all monies will dry up in local leagues without the super league teams participating.

Players:
Players play where they get paid the most and I don't see any player revolt to a super league. Its a job and they want nothing more than money and fame. If the top players stick to the ESL teams what then?

Fans:
Fans of an older generation will feel the pain more so than our kids who are up coming into being paying supporters. I'm not convinced fans will revolt hard enough for long enough to change the viability of the product. At the end its how the fans react that make this doable. Personally I would far rather watch the EPL in its current format than seeing Everton part of an ESL with nothing else. I honestly believe in too much of a good thing and the ESL will become routine very fast. Take the IPL (cricket) - first couple seasons watched every game, now couldn't care less as it really has no meaning or purpose. The clubs won't become symbols of their regions or countries but just franchises playing meaningless football games. But can I just walk away from Everton if this is my passion for 40 years.. I doubt it. This could create a void at local football level that those staying behind fill.. going back to players.. will they still dream of the ESL and play our contracts till they can join or get sold to the highest bidder and local clubs effectively become training and feeding grounds to the ESL?

FIFA only have the local league as a card and I'm not sure how powerful they feel this card is. But if I was in their shoes and I wanted to make the ESL a tournament that operates in a vacuum more and more disconnected from fans I would cut them out. ESL clubs maintaining local league affiliation creates a far more imbalanced local league. Part of me wonders if it is not already so imbalanced that will it pivot the league even more? Having 6 teams, not 4 and assured of those revenues every year.. yeah it will. What's already a tough mountain to climb will be insurmountable.

There is a trump card over the players - the World Cup. This is one thing that might keep players from jumping ship at first chance.. do I believe it though? Not sure.

Rambling summary: Uefa/FIFA to protect themselves might have to go for it. Its a massive risk to cut them out but its the only way to maintain control and "hope" that the ESL becomes boring to fans and they tune out eventually. But then this is a long term move and will hit them hard for a few years at least I would guess... unless they have the fans with them who vote with their wallets against it. But if the team you have supported your whole life is not playing local football what choice do you have? Seems to me the biggest losers are the fans.

sidenote.. Uefa/FIfa .. all the same to me. so excuse if used incorrectly.
