Champions League revamp

At least we now get to see if the premier league has the balls to do anything

im guessing a strongly worded statement is the most that will happen

shame there are no fans in the grounds at the moment, would be an interesting reaction.

I am not surprised or particularly upset about this, my only interest is how the rest of football will operate once they're gone. I do think they should be expelled from their domestic leagues, but I am intrigued as to how this will work. there will obviously be a massive impact on finances for the rump of the PL and the lower leagues. Will Everton reconsider the new stadium investment? Where will the TV money come from for the scaled-down English football pyramid?

Have actual details of this fiasco been released at all? Will there be relegation for instance? How many fixtures will there be? Do they expect to continue to participate in their home leagues?

They’ve burnt their boats on this, let’s hope the condemnation is universal, press etc. Love to see them given a one season ban by the Premier League for starters, and see what their players make of that.

If the groundswell of opinion among fans is against this idea then a move to boycott any company sponsoring or financially supporting this endeavour would threaten this cash cows viability.

Yes of course but the key difference here is what makes football a sport - competition and the ability for anyone to reach the pinnacle. If there is no opportunity for clubs to qualify for tournaments on merit, then is it truly a sporting competition?

I'm not against money in football. It's not the money element of this which is the biggest problem. It's the fact that qualification is based on wealth not results on a football pitch and the fact that there will be no comeback for failure on the pitch in this competition.

I was only born a year after the PL was formed so don't have a grasp of what things were like prior to its formation. But the PL has never been a closed shop and points on the board have always given the chance for prizes at the end of a season. That is what makes a sport a sport.

The likes of Arsenal sitting in 9th as a mediocre midtable club, yet running off to create a new tournament where they don't need to qualify, is one of the craziest things I've seen in sport.
The money (or rather the obscene amount of it) is the problem. It creates the inequality that allows dangerous crackpot ideas like this to flourish. I take your point re qualification and competition but that is only on the table because of the money.
