Champions League revamp

Given the rhetoric, and what UEFA have said, and the PL put out earlier, I'd be amazed if they let 6 clubs, who will.have hundreds of millions more, continue to play.

You can never say never, but I'd be amazed.

It would be akin to your spouse saying they are shagging your mate, but what to come over for Sunday lunch and to have their washing done. If you have ounce of self respect, or sense, you just say no.

I would be very surprised if talks dont happen to boot them out.

The other curveball is Sky/Bt. They have formed a rival competition, on a rival network. They will play their kids in the PL. Theres no way they will have it.

I've sat in meetings, and I'm not half as smart as these execs, but it's so obvious that you cannot allow them to stay. You're only play is to react in kind. You might not win, but at least you have a chance.

If the threat of them losing PL status us put there, maybe some re consider. That's your only play.
Depending on who cooks it
My missus does a brilliant Sunday roast dinner
Not too worried about the shag ,I can get that anywhere :):):):):)

It does, but that change - making it a more even contest, would probably improve it. The RS, United and City have immense global fanbases but that is because (a) they were in the PL and (b) they were winning things. Both of those things change with the SL.

Ain't it mad how loads of people can't think long term?

If these six were binned off, it really wouldn't take that long before you'd have a 'new big six' in its' place unless football overall gets a salary cap/college draft-esque system.

Playing Man Utd/Liverpool/City only has the gravitas it does because they've won things. If Leicester won the title for the next five years on the spin, they have the same status.

Who the hell gave a toss about playing Chelsea or City until 10-15 years ago? Nobody!

BIN THEM ALL OFF, any player who plays for them is banned from any FIFA or UEFA regulated competition, for perpetuity. Hopefully Competing in the World Cup still means something to most players,

Any pandering to them and they will win, come down hard from the beginning and this will be a non-starter.

I hope so, but I just think the prem is going to let this settle and then come back and say they renegotiated with the breakaway 6 and got a 'wonderful' deal with the other 14 clubs (even though the top 6 are getting more) and then next season will be the same as any other but with the 6 in the super league, and everton, west ham, leicester in the champs league and they wouldn't complain either. Maybe they'll 'slap' the 6 with a 10 point deduction which wouldn't matter anyway because they walk the league...

Oliver Dowden, the sports minister, speaking in the House of Commons “Football is in our national DNA...I was appalled by the announcement made last night. It’s a tone-deaf proposal that goes against the spirit of the game. We will not stand by and let this happen.’ A small handful of owners want to create a closed shop. I believe passionately in our national institutions. They form solidarity across the generations. Now we will not hesitate to protect one of those national institutions, football. This will fall to the football authorities first, but if they can’t, we will. We will put everything on the table. They have put money before fans.”

There you go - it won't happen if the Government can effectively tax or hammer the hell out of them to the point financially it makes no sense to go ahead with the new league.

Unless these clubs have already done their homework.

It’s a sure-fire vote winner for the government if they stop this.

Well if they lose a chunk of the up front payment, it would hurt.
Its the other point that is interesting, the visa crackdown. Seems to be suggesting work permits may become a little bit more difficult for the 6 to obtain.

Wealthy people get around stuff like that. Nothing has ever stopped people with money.

Every answer I give will basically be - money solves the problem.

I'm not sure it is. I don't think too many people are getting up in the middle of the night to watch Norwich play Brighton if i'm honest. Part of the appeal of the PL is that all the other clubs play the big boys and might just turn them over. Take away that possibility and it changes the entire product.

Short term sure, but more meium term surely you just get a new set of big boys. A bit like when the likes of Newcastle, Black, Leeds, Forest etc fell away and were replaced By Chelsea and then City.

Like if we had this conversation 20 odd years ago, people probably scoff at the idea Leeds and Newcastle could be replaced by Manchester City, people would have thought you made.

United and Liverpool would be difficult losses in the short term. But the rest, I am really not convined they generate much more for the league than any other of the "big" sides being up there (us, Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Forest etc).

I also think the "Asian market" is probably slightly over played as a money making scheme. Yes lots of views, but the main revenue for the PL still comes from English supporters buying sky packages. I'm not wholly convinced people are going to massively stop watching, even if those teams were expelled.

I agree that a PL with a more even playing field is an appealing prospect for us, but it isn't for the 'fans of the future' that the Superleague clubs are talking about. All this talk about them being surprised at the backlash etc is incredibly naive. They know exactly what they're doing, they know that there is a market for what they're proposing, and that market will inevitably eat quite substantially into the current PL market. Of course it doesn't mean that the whole thing has to go kaput, but the idea that Norwich are going to be able to replace £50m a year in global TV rights by making their games PPV is...well... let's call it ambitious.
